Anna Cartner Obituary

Anna Gertrude "Trudy" Hardison Cartner, 84, died Friday, December 8, 2006 at Beverly Healthcare Center.
A memorial service will be held on February 17, 2007 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Greenville, NC at 12 noon.
Anna Gertrude Hardison was born December 21, 1921 in Beaufort County, NC, to George Brown Hardison and Mary Ida Olivian Woolard. She was salutatorian, 1938, Stokes-Pactolus High School; A.B., 1943, Meredith College where she was a varsity archer and archery coach; and M.A., 1953, East Carolina College. She was married to John Alexander Cartner, Jr. (1918-1980). Committed to her career in education, she taught for 34 years, including 25 in the Greenville, NC city schools from which she retired in 1983. She specialized in the teaching of reading to middle school students and was known for pioneering innovative and effective techniques for students with learning disabilities. She was an active member and served as president of local chapters of NCAE, NEA and the Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma honorary educators' sorority. A member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church parish since 1957, her many activities included membership in the vestry and volunteering as a Lay Eucharistic Minister to nursing home residents. She was known for her many years as a popular and dedicated volunteer at Beverly Manor Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her beloved companion, Kenneth M. Watkins of Greenville, NC and her brother, Charles Thelbert Hardison of Stokes, NC.
She is survived by: son, John A.C. Cartner, J.D., PhD. and wife, Mary Charles Cheek Armstrong, of Alexandria, VA; daughter, Linda Brown Cartner Miller, M.D. and husband, Donald Salyerds Miller, of Maule's Point, Blounts Creek, NC; brother, George LaVerne Hardison and wife, Lois Kinlaw Hardison, of Wadsworth, OH; brother-in-law, C. Joseph Cartner of Newport News, VA; grandchildren, Sarah Teel C. Miller and Elizabeth R.B. Miller, both of Maule's Point, at Blount's Creek, NC, Christian W. J. Cartner, and Natalie V.O. Cartner, both of Alexandria, VA; great-grandchild, Skyler Olivian G. Warner of Alexandria, VA; beloved caregivers, Nancy L. Perkins and Karen L. Leggett of Greenville, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meredith College, 3800 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27607-5298, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, All Souls Fund, or the Anna H. Cartner Middle School Literacy Foundation, P.O. Box 2533, Greenville, NC 27836.
