Anne Askew Obituary

Dr. Anne Preston Askew

Raleigh

Dr. Anne Preston Askew, died peacefully on the evening of October 27th at her home in Bayleaf near Raleigh, NC.

Anne was born May 14, 1931 to Colonel Walter J. Preston and Edna Brown Preston. She graduated Valedictorian of the Class in 1948 at Fayetteville High School and was Phi Beta Kappa at UNC Woman's College. After declaring her intention to become a baby doctor at age 5, she completed her Medical Degree at Duke Medical School in 1956.

Anne practiced pediatric medicine in Raleigh for almost 35 years until a horseback riding accident tragically happened in 1995. Caring for multiple generations, she loved her patients and their families. She thought highly of the nurses and staff that supported her—hosting elegant tea parties to commemorate special occasions in their lives.

An accomplished woman, she eagerly pursued and enjoyed numerous interests. She and Blake played golf and tennis while dating and he gave her a piano as newlyweds. Together they were founding members of the Red Mountain Foxhounds.

She is survived by her loving husband of sixty years, S. Blake Askew, Jr; sister, Beaupre Preston of Atlanta; daughter, Deryle and husband Lee Allen of Atlanta; son, Stell Askew and wife, Terry of Durham, and son, Michael Askew and wife, Ristie of Oriental. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Meredith Howard and husband, Byron; Michael Askew, Jr and Mary Anna Askew.

At her request, the family will hold a private memorial to celebrate her life.

Thank you for sharing you wife/ mom with my family. She treated me as a daughter giving me words of wisdom on how to take care of my 2 daughters. There was never another doctor like her. She always amazed me how much she remembered about my girls even years after her accident.
So sorry for your loss.

I have very fond memories of Dr. Askew. She took care of my first child who was born in 1980. No question asked of her was considered trivial. She took all the time in the world to answer your questions. That was a treasure to me as a new mother. May you rest in heavenly peace, Dr. Askew.

Such a special person. When my son became ill she cancelled all her appointments one day & literally carried him in her arms across the street to Rex. She & her staff came to his funeral more as friends than as a medical staff. She believed no one could take care of her patients like she could & I believe she was right.

I worked on Pediatrics at Rex and loved Dr. Askew. I have been to some of the teas she hosted at her home for nurses who were getting married and it was such a lovely time. She was such a sweet and dear lady.

I have many fond memories of Dr.Askew..she was one of the kindest women I have ever known..always providing the best medical care and advice a young mother could ask for. It was a very sad day when she could no longer practice medicine. I got to visit her several times at her home and was so pleased to see she was hoping to write a book about childcare. I too was treated to the proper way to make tea...I know the family will sorely miss her and her kind words. Thinking of you..Randall and Lola Dail

My girls loved Dr. Askew as much as I loved her. She cared for them from birth until college. I remember so many funny things that she told me ( from the tooth fairy not coming ) to her dog that rode to the hospital at night with her. She even visited my daughter in the hospital where she did not practice because she knew her support was needed. She was one of a kind!

Dr. Askew was my pediatrician growing up and she was the best. I spent a lot of time with her as I had terrible allergies and got allergy shots every week for years. She and her staff were so kind to me and I always felt so comfortable in her presence. She was a special person and amazing doctor.

Dr. Askew was a rock of wisdom, sympathy, and understanding to me as a young mother. Even now, with the recent birth of my first grandchild, I hear her voice assuring me that "It's all normal. Take care of yourSELF, and enjoy that baby." Her work was immensely important, and she did it masterfully. Rest in blessed peace, Dr. Anne.

I know I am one of many who loved and trusted Dr Askew with their children. The many trips to her office will always remain in my memory. From the time you were a new mom, she always gave you confidence in yourself and if you ever needed her she was there. Who can ever forget the wooden rocking toy with the big red ball handle! Loved her dearly
