Bertha Matthews Obituary

Sanford, North Carolina - Bertha Lemon "Bert" Matthews, 83 of Sanford passed away Friday December 17, 2021. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday (12/22/2021) at Lemon Springs United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
Born in Danville, PA, she was a daughter of the late Leon L. Lemon and Esther Engler Lemon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Max Griffin Matthews, and siblings, Alvin Lemon, Leon Lemon and Dorothy Johnson (Kenneth).
Bert was a longtime member of Lemon Springs United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and was the Church treasurer for twenty-six plus years. She served the Pastor's Relations Board of the United Methodist Church for many years, was a Past President for the N.C. Methodist Women, and served the Board of the N.C. Methodist Foundation. Mrs. Matthews served as a Lee County Commissioner for twenty plus years, served the National Association of County Commissioners, and served on the Lee County Dept of Social Services Board for many years; Bert also served on the Board of Directors of First Citizens Bank, Board of Directors of N.C. Farm Bureau, Past President of Lee Co. Democratic Women, and Past President of the Lee County Home Extension.
Mrs. Matthews is survived by her daughter, Kristie M. McNeill (Richard) of Sanford; son, Greg Matthews (Amy) of Sanford; grandchildren, Morgan Rosser (Dylan), Katie Makepeace, Emma McNeill, Abby McNeill, Max Reid McNeill, Griffin Matthews, and Greyson Matthews; great grandchildren, Aiden Rosser, Connor Rosser, and Eli Makepeace; sister, Ruth Todd (Lane) of Lebanon, MO, and sister in laws Nikki Lemon of Titusville, FL and Lois Lemon of Kansas City, KS.
The family will greet friends beginning at 2:00 pm Wednesday at Lemon Springs United Methodist Church prior to the Funeral service.
