Dr. Chalmers Fred Clark Jr., died on December 7, 2008 at Duke University Medical Center after battling heart disease for a number of years.
Fred was born in Mooresville, NC on June 25, 1931, the son of C.F. Clark, Sr. and Grace Goodrum Clark. Fred attended the Mooresville City schools. He attended Duke University for his pre-dental education and received the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1956. Immediately following his graduation, he served two years in the US Air Force stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, AL. After fulfilling his military commitment, Fred established a general dentistry practice in Durham. He retired from his practice in 1996. Fred was devoted to his staff and patients and continued his association and interest in them throughout his life.
Fred is survived by his wife, Anne Lowrance Clark; two sons, Chalmers Fred Clark III and wife, Sarah of Mission Hills, KS, Andrew Harrison Clark and wife, Denise of Apex; granddaughters, Rierson Stephens, Anne Gray and Morgan May; grandsons, Andrew Logan and Charles Payne.
His parents and brother, Harold Monroe Clark, predeceased him.
During his active years, Fred served in many capacities as a 50- year member of Duke Memorial United Methodist Church and was a leader in various roles with Boy Scouts of America. He also was a Kiwanian for a number of years.
Fred was a member of the North Carolina Dental Society throughout his career and served as President of the Third District of the Society in 1970.
Fred was an avid sports fan, particularly of Duke University athletics and enjoyed his association with the Iron Dukes. He also enjoyed playing tennis at Hope Valley Country Club for many years with a group of avid players.
The Clark family would like to extend its thanks to the Heart Center of Duke University Medical Center and to the Ambulatory Clinic of Croasdaile Village for the compassionate care provided during Fred's illness.
A Service of Death and Resurrection will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church, 504 W. Chapel Hill Street, Durham, with The Reverend Ginger Thomas, The Reverend Ruth Harper Stevens and The Reverend Milton Hadley participating.
The family will receive visitors immediately following the service in the church parlor.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Duke Memorial United Methodist Church, 504 W. Chapel Hill Street, Durham, NC 27701 or to the United Methodist Retirement Homes Foundation for the benefit of Croasdaile Village, 2600 Croasdaile Farm Parkway, Durham, NC 27705.
