Deborah DeLong Obituary
October 26, 1955 - August 30, 2023
Raleigh, North Carolina - Deborah "Debbie" Lynne DeLong, 67, passed away August 30, 2023, at her home with her husband of 36 years by her side. Debbie had courageously battled Stage 4 cancer for the past 28 months. She never gave in to the disease and lived her life as normal as possible. She retired after 36 years of Federal service with the Treasury Department and the Social Security Administration. Debbie especially loved her grandchildren and enjoyed spending the holidays with family, going to the beach, reading, cooking, tailgating at West Virginia University football games, lunch with former co-workers, and going to the movies with her husband. Born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Ardith and Mable Vannoy. She was preceded in death by her son, Christopher Shad McVey; brother-in-law, Steve Lewis; step-brother, Foster "Buddy" Vannoy; father and mother-in-law; Shannon and Freda DeLong. She is survived by her husband, Dennis DeLong; sister, Jennifer Lewis of Rockport, WV; son, Jared McVey, his wife, Megan, and sons; Bennett and Hudson of Charlotte; son, Andrew DeLong and fiancée, Malorey Henderson of Raleigh; son, William DeLong, his wife, Amber; daughters; Emma and Anna, and son, Liam of Mason, Ohio; and daughter, Stephanie Vazquez of Portland, TN; her son, Stephen Mishoe and fiancée, Shelia Kirshner of Portland, TN; and her daughter, Heather Mishoe and fiancée, Jonathan Williams and their daughter, Adeline of Clarksville, TN; brother-in-law, Jeff and wife, Ellen DeLong; several nieces; and nephews. The family wish to thank all the wonderful people at the UNC Rex Cancer Center, especially: Dr. Alan Kritz and Cathrine Anna, as their efforts gave Debbie the opportunity to extend her life and enjoy her family and friends, and to ProMedica Hospice, especially: Diana, Ann, Tammy and Deidra for their warmth and compassionate care they provided Debbie allowing to live her remaining days with dignity and peace. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children' Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to UNC Health Foundation, 123 West Franklin St., Suite 510, Chapel Hill, NC 27516. Please include Deborah DeLong/Angel Fund in memo line.

Debbie was a coworker and mentor who became a dear, dear friend, and ultimately an example of how a person lives life courageously. I will miss her dearly.

It is with great sadness that I read about Debbie. I was fortunate to land in Raleigh, NC after Hurricane Katrina and worked with Debbie in the Social Security Office. She was a fantastic co-worker and an immediate friend. She worked hard and laughed even harder. She made a pressure cooker of an office a place you didn't mind coming to every day. Condolences to her family, I'm so sorry for your loss.
