Donald Teas Obituary

Donald C. Teas

Raleigh

Donald C. Teas, PhD, age 89, passed away in his home in Raleigh, NC on Saturday August 6, 2016 surrounded by his children.

Dr. Teas received his degrees from the University of Texas in Austin where he married Jean Harlan. After teaching at Drake University, in1958, he began post-doctoral studies at Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis MO, Washington University. During this time Don and Jean began their family. In 1962 he completed his Post-Doctoral study at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the Communication Biophysics Laboratory.

After working at the University of Pittsburgh Eye and Ear Hospital, the family moved to Gainesville FL in 1967. There he taught and did research in the Departments of Speech and Psychology. His work provided the basis for development of techniques for the study of the electrical responses of audition, and as the basis for widely used diagnostics such as newborn hearing screening using auditory evoked potentials and the cochlear implant.

After retiring from the UF in 1989 he worked at Brooks AFB in San Antonio. In 1990 he married Eloise Harriss in Austin and worked with Dynastat Inc. and was affiliated with the UT in Austin.

Throughout his life, Don was active as a musician. As a young man, before enrolling at UT, he earned his living as a "reed man", playing the flute, clarinet and alto sax in Austin based jazz swing bands. After retirement, for many years, he played the Alto Sax with the Austin Community College Jazz Band.

He is survived by his son Malcolm Teas and daughter in-law Pamela King, daughter Eliza Teas-Trudeau, her son-in-law James Trudeau and his grandson Thomas Trudeau, daughter Robin Teas and her son- in-law William Moore.

A memorial service will be held at Brookdale Raleigh Senior Living Community at 1200 Carlos Dr. in Raleigh, NC at 2pm on Wednesday, August 10. Memorial donations can be sent to Heartland Hospice.

We will always remember Doc playing his sax in the front row of the ACC Jazz Ensemble. He played with such joy! Doc was a man with a soft voice and a large spirit. That came through in his music and in his personal life. Doc and Eloise invited us over to their home for dinner one night early in our relationship. They were welcoming hosts for Tom and myself as well as another couple. Doc always asked about our daughters and showed a genuine interest in us. The day before he moved to North Caroline, we had lunch together. We were impressed with his positive attitude. Dr. Don Teas made a real difference in this world. We are honored to have called him a friend.

Doc was a contributing member of the ACC Band, my counsel, and my friend for over 25 years. I will miss him dearly. With affection, Tom
