Dorothy Levine Mayer died at her home in Chapel Hill on May 5, 2017 at 2:22am at the age of 92. Daughter of Etta and Morris Levine, doyenne of progeny spanning three continents, great grandmother of Finley Grace Mayer-Salman and Guilherme Reis Ribeiro, grandmother of Joel Morris Brown, Laurel Gentry Brown, Lon Jeffrey Mayer-Salman, Joseph Morris Mayer-Salman, Juliana Reis Ribeiro, Patricia Mayer Reis and Felipe Mayer Reis, mother of Heidi Lou Mayer Reis, Gary Robert Brown and Nancy Ann Mayer, mother-in-law of David Salman, Patsy Brown and Alvaro Veiga. Raconteur, dirty joke teller, amateur actress and her father's best drinking buddy. Born in Brooklyn, NY; lived in Merrick, NY, Smithtown, NY, Lakeland, FL, Gainesville, FL, Brasilia, Brazil, Manaus, Brazil, Winston-Salem, NC, Lakewood, CO, and Chapel Hill, NC. Housemother for 25 years at Wake Forest University, University of Denver and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Taught English as a foreign language for close to 10 years in Brasilia, Brazil where she performed and directed theater productions at the national theater. A revolutionary at heart who would have achieved more during a more enlightened time. Gave us confidence to live and learn. There will be a memorial service to celebrate Dorothy's life on Saturday, July 8 at 10:30 am at The Community Church of Chapel Hill Unitarian Universalist. Business casual attire is encouraged. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service, 110 W. Main Street Carrboro, NC, 27510.

Dorothy was a very accepting, loving person, even with her illness and the knowledge of her demise, she showed concern
About others, always asking how are you? What a sense of humor, I am sure that got her through many rough spots in her life, and don't we all have rough spots. It was a pleasure and an honor to have known her.

How fortunate her family is to have been able to have Dorothy as a member for such a long time! Dorothy was my friend and I will remember her as a "sparkly, spicy, subtly elegant" woman with a caring heart. I know she will be missed by many.

I am so sorry for your lost.
Dorthy always brought with her a sense of humor and a positive attitude toward life. I enjoyed being in her presence. She wrote cards for the Caring Community which brought comfort to those that received them. I appreciated her and enjoyed working with her on this committee.
