Dred Stuart Walston, 87, died at home on Wednesday morning. Funeral 11 a.m. Saturday, First United Methodist Church. Interment, Maplewood Cemetery.
Walston has been a life-long resident of Wilson. Upon graduation from Charles L. Coon High School, he attended the UNC-Chapel Hill. In June 1941, he graduated with a degree in Interior Arch-iture and Decoration from Parsons School of Design in New York. That same month, he was drafted into the Army Air Corps. After completion of O.C.S., he was attached to the 8th Air Force Quarter-master Office serving in Ireland and England. He spent two years at Headquarters 8th Air Force and served a total of four and a half years during World War II before being discharged shortly before V.J. Day.
Upon returning home, he worked with his father at H. H. Walston & Sons. Later he formed a partnership with Hubert Allen as Allen & Walston Decorators. In 1954, he founded Stuart Walston, Inc. in which he was an active participant until his death. Walston has been a member of the American Institute of Decorators since 1958 and later a member of A.S.I.D.
Walston was an active member of the First United Methodist Church serving on the building committee and Chief Usher for a number of years.
Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Doris Schaum Walston; daughter, Ruth Walston Harris and her husband, Clyde of Wilson; sons, D. Stuart Walston, Jr, and his wife, Starlette, of Wilson and Richard C. Walston and wife, Susan, of Alameda CA; grandchildren, Charlotte Fleming Harris of Raleigh, Clyde P. Harris, III and wife, Ashley of Raleigh, Clark Walston Harris of Wilson, Anna Walston Williams and husband, Ben of Raleigh, Sarah T. Walston of Wilson, Allison M. Walston of Wilmington and Mathew Stuart Walston of Alameda CA; sister, Sarah Peters of Wilson; brothers, H.H. Walston, III, and Hubert Walston of Wilson.
The family will be at home, 1000 W. Nash St.
