I have known Edouard for a long time. First as the younger brother of my friend Aldert here then later as he grew up a friend of mine. It
Ed had a lot of energy. I admired him from the time he was little because he was never lazy He had a lot of compassion. He was always interested in what was going on with me and my family. He was always interested in my jazz music I was interested in his rock music. Ed was a natural musician. Although we never played music together I was honored to record on a Johnny Dodge recording shortly after Ed passed where he was playing drums. I was also honored to be asked to perform at his memorial service. The first time my mother met Ed when he was four years old she said "That little Edourard Root is a spitfire! He is a cute little devil!" I would concur. Love you Ed!

I had noticed Ed in Cup A Joe. A handsome, tall, funny man. Appreciation was so founded that I told him and we enjoyed coffee and convo together two times after. I am shocked to hear of his passing - he seemed like a healthy gentleman - perhaps we should all be czeched up more often. RIP Mr. Root, artist.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of our friend Edouard. He was the most naturally gifted individual I have had the pleasure of knowing. Though many years have passed since we last spoke, the memories of his infectious personality and grin have not waned. Rest In Peace my Brother!

Edouard was a perfectionist! I hired him to paint my sisters historic house. He took off every bit of old paint, replaced all the rotten wood with quality lumber, sanded everything perfectly, primed and painted it with two coats. It still looks beautiful ten years later. He would bring treats for my niece and the neighbor children, and my sisters rabbit, which kept him company. I last saw him a month ago, riding his unicycle up the hill on Oakwood Avenue. I went to his tribute at the Berkeley. It was packed with people from all walks of life! Many former bandmates played songs he was best known for. Edouard brought joy to so many people through his music, his craftsmanship, his feats of daring, and his kindness and generosity.

I am so sorry to hear of Ed's passing! He was a dear friend for many years. I loved to hear him play drums, and to listen to him speak so fondly about his Kung Fu study. We used to compare notes on stretching, since my career is dance. He will be missed. Hugs to you in the universe, Ed! Katherine xoxo

Dear Arden and Aldert, I never knew Edouard well but have fond memories of spending time at the Root household when I was in high school. I have vivid memories of Ed doing hand stands in the driveway as we all looked on in awe! Big Aldert and Arden treated my friends and me with so much hospitality as we listened to music! Such a magical family! Please know that thoughts are with you during this difficult journey.
Much love,

We had the pleasure of Ed's company for months as he painted our bungalow on Mordecai Drive. He did a beautiful job and we all missed him, even the dog who always checked the little spot where Ed had left him bone day after day. He had such a big heart, for us all. Much love to his family. -Clare Brown

Its still hard to believe Ed Root has passed, and my heart goes out to his family during this difficult time.
For those of us that grew up in West Raleigh during the 70s and 80s, Ed was legendary and all of the neighborhood kids were sort of in awe of him. He was quick to defend us from a bully, or help build a fort, treehouse, or skateboard ramp...and then totally amaze everyone by riding his skateboard in a handstand on that ramp!
Ed was strong as an ox and feared no one and nothing but was also a kind, gentle, sensitive soul. He might do a quadruple backflip jackknife off the Neuse River bridge one minute, and the next practically hypnotize a feral cat with a simple touch.
Im going to miss his loyal friendship, his energy and fearless nature, his intelligence, his drum skills, his kindness, his hilarious random texts, his unique and infectious giggle, the sometimes marathon phone chats, and shooting the breeze with him at the coffee shop after a long workday.
Were all going to miss you terribly, Ed. Rest In Peace, Brother...

Ed wI'll be missed. He was a friend from kindergarten. We were the class clowns back then. We went on to compete on swim teams and later make music at his folks house. Fond memories of playing Amphitheater across from Raleigh Little Theater during the afternoon and then setting up to play at the Silver Bullet Saloon which is now Goodnight's Comedy Club. Thoughts and prayers are with you Al and Arden

Hey Aldert and family, So sorry to hear of your brother's passing. I remember fondly the times we had together years ago and Ed palling around with us as only a younger brothers can do. It is a tough losing a brother, but I hope and know with time and remembering the many wonderful times you guys had together will give you and your family comfort. God Bless. Pat Gorham

I believe there was a hiccup at the production line when Ed was up as he simply had too much energy poured into one vessel. He was just bursting with life and seemed like he had to constantly stay active to avoid going supernova. When he and Kelly were dating I got to witness the incredible sight of him doing a standing backflip just to burn some of the excess off. He was a sweet amazing human and we loved him very much. Please tell Yvette when his funeral will be as she is kind enough to keep me in the loop. Love and prayers to all the friends and family trying to keep their legs under them as this blow is felt and absorbed.

I just found out that Ed has passed on. I thought about it for a minute, and then just started to cry. He was an incredible human being. I'll never forget him playing Moby Dick on water glasses---the whole thing! He was a total force of energy, intelligence, and was a loving soul. I was thinking about him not long ago, and telling my son about what a great guy he was. I wish I'd been able to see him again. Those of us who grew up in Raleigh and knew him know what an awesome person he was! We'll all miss him. I don't know what else to say...... Love you Ed.

Ed was my best friend before I moved away, but we always stayed in touch and never missed a beat when reunited. A man of remarkable talents - champion swimmer, unicyclist extoadanairre, gymnast, drummer of course, and a man who would do feats that would make your jaw drop. Yet, Ed's greatest asset was his heart. I'll miss him terribly.

My Friend
The strength of a giant, the eyes of a child
The fountain of rhythm, the call of the wild
The pride of an artist, even pulling a plough
There's a hole in the world that I live in now
Semper fidelis, for those he called friends
I was lucky to be one, through thick and through thin
The fire in his belly, I saw at age six
There's a hole in the world that nobody can fix
Causer of laughter, in any situation
Believed in his God, his city and nation
Believed you should do the things that are right
There's a hole in the world that I live in tonight
I woke up this morning, I felt the wind blow
I wanted to cry, but there's one thing I know
He's right here with us, right in our hearts
When we laugh, when we fight, when we just do our parts
And it makes us all better, these gifts he imparts
Though it won't fill the hole, it's a hell of a start
