Dr. Edward Henry Sussenguth II, 83, of Amelia Island, Florida and Cary, North Carolina passed away peacefully at home on November 22, 2015 with family by his side.  Ed was born October 10, 1932 in Needham, Massachusetts the son of Edward and Mary Sussenguth.

He married Ann Coughlin Sussenguth, January, 1959. They had two sons Edward Henry Sussenguth III (Eddie) and John Andrew Sussenguth (Jack). He was a wonderful father, grandfather, friend and colleague.  His passions included golf, traveling the world, reading, and working on his computer. 

Ed was educated at Harvard College (A.B., 1954), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.S., 1957), and Harvard University (Ph.D., 1964). Immediately after college he served as a Naval officer in the Pacific Fleet. He joined IBM in 1959 in its Research Division where he worked with others on formal description languages and information retrieval.

He had an illustrious career with IBM including being theDirector of Architecture and Planning in 1981 where he was appointed an IBM Fellow, the highest technical position in IBM. In 1989, he was appointed to be the first President of the IBM Academy of Technology, a group of IBM's most highly qualified scientists and engineers. He held that position until he retired. 

Sussenguth had been advisor to then National Bureau of Standards and a visiting professor at some universities.  He was the recipient of many technical leadership awards. He was elected Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers(IEEE) and received their Simon Ramo Award. He was also elected to the National Academy of Engineering.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, the thing that everyone around him loved the most was his great humility and kindness to all he came into contact with. His humor, zest for life and wonderful conversations will be greatly missed. 

Surviving is his son Eddie, daughter in law Leilani, granddaughters Jade Leilani Sussenguth and Eden Leimomi Sussenguth of Lafayette, CA.
