Elaine Crovitz Obituary

Elaine Kobrin Crovitz

October 18, 1936 - February 29, 2024

Elaine Kobrin Crovitz of Oak Park, IL, died on February 29 at age 87.

Dr. Elaine Crovitz was born October 18, 1936, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Sidney and Jennie (Papier) Kobrin. She graduated from Brooklyn College at the age of 19, having skipped grades in the New York City public school system, and earned her masters and Ph.D. in psychology at Duke University, in Durham, N.C.

Dr. Crovitz, a former resident of Durham, NC, taught psychology at the Duke University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and at North Carolina Central University and saw patients at the Duke University Medical Center and at Veteran's Administration hospitals. At a time when there were few women clinicians or psychology professors, Dr. Crovitz was a trailblazer across academic disciplines and geographies: She was a frequent site visitor for the American Psychological Association, including to China, enabling her to make the most of her passion for travel. In the 1970s, she conducted early research and counseled patients on transgender operations, helping many individuals get the chance to live as their gender identity.

Dr. Crovitz, who explained that she became a psychologist because she so enjoyed speaking with people, was known for her animated conversations, even with strangers and even after parties had otherwise ended. Dr. Crovitz's enthusiastic engagement with people throughout her life, which combined her Brooklyn energy and her acquired southern charm, was a constant source of surprise even to her children and closest friends.

A lifelong feminist, Dr. Crovitz was the co-author of "Courage Knows No Sex" (1978), which profiled pioneering women. After her retirement, she continued her work as an educator, serving as a substitute teacher in the Orange County, N.C., public school system. She also wrote a book of fiction in her retirement that was a murder mystery combined with pointed criticism of healthcare's managed care system, "Premedicated Murder" (2000), about which the Durham Morning Herald review said, "It's not often that you find murder, medicine and mayhem" in a novel. Following the 9/11 attacks on New York's World Trade Center by terrorists in 2001, Dr. Crovitz spent months in lower Manhattan giving psychological support to rescue and other essential workers through the American Red Cross.

Known as "Mama Jazz" to her fellow fans, Dr. Crovitz helped curate exhibits on jazz in Durham, N.C., and donated music materials to the city's Yusif Salim Collection. She was a loyal Duke basketball fan through several eras of greatness. She was a founder of Judea Reform Congregation in Durham, N.C.

She is survived by her children, Gordon Crovitz (Minky Worden) of New York, N.Y., Debbie Manus (Paul) of Durham, N.C, and Sara Crovitz (John Sherburne) of Arlington, VA, and by her sister Miriam Mennin of Westport, CT. She was enormously proud of her grandchildren Melissa Manus (Daniel Ash), Justin Manus (Kayla), Jack Crovitz, Ben Sherburne, James Crovitz and Tom Crovitz and was looking forward to her great-grandchild expected by Kayla and Justin next month. She is predeceased by her former husband, Herbert Crovitz of Pittsboro, N. C. The family is grateful for the skilled and compassionate care from Lottie Zatlokiewicz.

A memorial is being planned in New York. Donations to the North Carolina Central University Jazz Ensemble Studies Fund would be appreciated.

Elaine was such an important mentor for me during my training at Duke. I can´t help but think of our lunch supervision meetings when she would listen carefully to my anxieties as a new psychologist and reassure me to "keep going". I´ll always remember her lunches consisting of yogurt and an apple that she sliced thoughtfully as we talked.

Mrs Krovitz was the hippest coolest kindest fiercest woman of her time!! I met her as a child when Sara and I were classmates at Durham Academy. She was always welcoming and encouraging. I´m and saddened by this loss. My love and prayers to Sara, Deb, Gordan and their families!!

I will always remember Elaine as an enthusiastic supporter of jazz musicians. At open mics and jams, she always encouraged the newbies and it meant a lot. Rest, Elaine. You fought the good fight.---Lori B.

Dr.Crovitz was my clinical supervisor at Duke for an entire internship year. One of my most favorite hours was sitting with her at lunch with her yogurt and apple and her kind guidance. In that often hectic-paced world, she was always my rock and my place of shelter and calm confidence. I thought of her often over the years since, including just two days before receiving the notice of her passing. She will always be one of the pillars in my life and I am so grateful to have known her.

I am sorry about the world's loss of Elaine. She was a pretty amazing woman. I knew of her when I was a graduate student in psychology at Duke, but didn't really get to know her until years later when we ended up being neighbors in Hillsborough. We had many interesting conversations when I passed her house on my dog walks... everything from politics, to exercise, to jazz, to her book "Premedicated Murder"... which my husband and I both enjoyed. My condolences to her family.

We can't say enough about how very special it was to know and spend time with Elaine. We knew her as Mama Jazz but we also knew she had many other facets to her life which we'd only glimpsed. She came to many of our gigs all over the triangle, especially Durham. She kept this incredible email list which publicized concerts, jam sessions, happenings; she helped to invigorate & support the incredible jazz community in Durham. She was a giving, loving, creative one of a kind person who left an indelible impression on our lives.

I didn't know her long, but she was a wonderful person. Happy to have had some time with her, however brief.

Elaine was a dear friend to me and my mom, Bev Pearson. She shared all of her Jazz information with us and took me to art events. She was so kind to me, my husband and our children. She always remembered them and had small gifts for them. Before she moved, she gifted us some of her art from local artists- she was so passionate about supporting the arts. I recently attended a concert for the first time at the blue note grill, and I thought of her. That was one of her favorite places- she was "Jazz Mama". She was a magnificent woman who was such an inspiration. I am thankful to have known her. Condolences to her family.

Mama Jazz was loved by so many in the Durham jazz and music community. We appreciated all that she did to get others excited about jazz in North Carolina. Her legacy of love for people and jazz will always remain.
