July 16, 1952 - September 11, 2025
Polkton, North Carolina - Elaine Bartholomew Scarborough, 73, of Polkton, NC, passed away peacefully at home on September 11, 2025. She was born on July 16, 1952, in Raleigh, NC to the late Thomas Alfred Bartholomew and Ethel McLawhorn Bartholomew. Elaine was a 1970 graduate of Millbrook HS and a 1974 graduate of Meredith College. She earned her Master of Education from UNC at Chapel Hill in 1978. She poured her gifts into her passion for education for more than 40 years as a teacher, principal, consultant and Executive Director of the Anson County Partnership for Children for 20 years. Elaine is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Alfred Bartholomew and Ethel McLawhorn Bartholomew. She is survived by her husband, Donald Pope Scarborough; their children, Whitney Thomas Scarborough Taylor (Jeremy), and Donald Logan Scarborough (Ashley); her beloved grandchildren: Holden Taylor, Merritt Taylor, Rivers Scarborough, and Craven Scarborough; her sister, Gail Kiker of Pinehurst; her brother, Tom Bartholomew (Ruth) of Raleigh; and her brother-in-law, Al Scarborough (Mickey); and nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 423, Wadesboro, NC 28170 or Baptist Children's Homes of North Carolina, P.O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361.
A service to celebrate Elaine's life will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at First Baptist Church, Lee Avenue, Wadesboro, NC. Please visit www.leavittfh.com for an extended obituary.

Elaine was very special to my family. In 2011, she gave me a chance to help her fundraise for the Partnership. She was my first client and now, the Partnership is my oldest client. Elaine cared about Anson County and it was an honor to help her provide for Anson's Children. I will miss you, Elaine and we will be praying for Don and your family. Our love to you and yours.
