Elizabeth Colerick "Jody" Clipp

Elizabeth Clipp Obituary

Elizabeth Colerick "Jody" Clipp, PhD, RN, died peacefully in her home Sunday, August 5, 2007 with her family around her. She was 57.
Jody was born in Charlotte, NC and raised in Hohokus, NJ and Baltimore, MD. She graduated from the University of Maryland and worked as an emergency room nurse for eight years before leaving for Cornell University where she earned her Doctorate of Psychology. She accepted a faculty position in the Aging Center of Duke University's Department of Medicine and within eight years was awarded Fellowship in the American Gerontological Society. She rose to become a full professor of medicine and Associate Director for Research in the Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center at the Durham VA Medical Center.
Five years ago Jody switched her primary appointment to the Duke University School of Nursing, where she founded the school's first scientific Center of Excellence, led the creation of the Doctorate of Philosophy in Nursing program and later became the Associate Dean for Research. She was awarded the Bessie Baker Chair in Nursing and this year became a Fellow in the American Society of Nursing. Duke University has honored her by renaming the research facility the "Elizabeth C. Clipp Nursing Research Building."
Jody was a nationally recognized researcher in the area of care giving for the chronically ill, and for improving the quality of life and care at the end of life. However, her true skill was in bringing other people together to form consensus and achieve a common goal. She lit up a room with her engaging smile and flaming red hair, but she always put the other person ahead of herself and made them feel special to her. Her mentoring, especially of female scientists, at Duke and UNC may be her greatest legacy.
Jody is survived by her husband of 21 years, Steven Clipp; son, Stephen; and daughters, Elizabeth and Celeste; her mother, Elizabeth Colerick; brother, Craig Colerick; and sister-in-law, Lezlie Colerick.
If it is possible to have it all, Jody did. Somehow she always found time to be with her children, to play their games and read over their school papers. She and Steve had a love affair that was just getting started.
A memorial mass will be held Friday, August 10th, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 940 Carmichael Street, Chapel Hill. A reception will follow in the church.
Before her death Jody established a fund to support scholarship in nursing of the aged.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Clipp Memorial Fund, 512 S. Mangum Street, Suite 400, Durham, NC 27701, attention: Susan Glenn.
Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill is serving the Clipp family.

Our thoughts, prayers and love to Steven, Steve, Elizabeth, Celeste, Aunt Betty and Craig.

Jody, May God be holding you in the palm of his Hand! GodSpeed and rest well. You gave it all you had and you lived your life as God meant us to do.

My mother will miss you so much! Your letters meant so much to her and she always looked forward to hearing from you and sharing your news and pictures with us. She also understands and accepts that you are free from suffering and where you are meant to be.

Our hope for the family is that you feel Jody's presence around you and know that she is still with you, watching you, guiding you and loving you. May the memories each of you have of her sustain you in the days to come, especially during the times when you will need them the most.

Love from Aunt Pauline and Janice

I heard of Jody's passing today at mass at 9:15am at St. Thomas More. I was shocked and lost my breath. I could not believe what I had just heard. I always remember turning around and seeing her smiling face from a few pews behind me. Her family might remember me as the girl who wants to be a Nun. I am still pursuing that calling. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. In His Unconditional Love,
Alex Larsen

Jody and I became telephone friends when she called us because Allen Chipps, a Bio Medical Center patient and author told her that my husband Charlie Beswick had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December of 2006 and had chosen to be under the care of the Bio Medical Center and started the "Hoxsey" diet. Jody wanted to know our opinion of the Center and we had only good things to say abut our experience there. Jody was able to go to the Bio Medical Center twice as you know and had renewed hope and length of days because of the program. Charlie and I found hope there and he had longevity because of being on the program while no one else gave us hope. He fell asleep in death June 30th and Jody was very consoling to me as she always put others first in the conversation. I called her to see how she was doing often and she would tell me but always asked about Charlie.
God's rich blessing on the lovely family she created and nourished.
Much love and fond memories, Bettie Beswick

Jody was a good neighbor, and I enjoyed our little "rivalry" of Duke vs. Carolina. Jody always asked about my family; she was truly a family person. I will miss her bright smile and happy voice. She was a class act!

I can't conceive of how Jody's passing has impacted your family. I am so glad I was able to see your family all together at Craig and Lezly's wedding. I also have great memories of the time I passed through NC and talked with Jody about the joys and hassles of raising three children. I think about happy times like when I got the "back stage pass" to your wedding and multiple adventures with Craig and Jody from high school on. I share a small, small part of the loss you must be feeling because Jody was like a big sister to me. Anyway, I am so sorry for your loss.

Deepest sympathy. Jody lived in Timonium right behind our family home and Craig called this afternoon with such tragic news. I am so sorry to learn of this. May she rest in peace.
