Eric Noderer Obituary

Eric Robert Noderer

January 6, 1978-January 29, 2016

Cary

With heavy hearts and tremendous sadness, the family of Eric R. Noderer of Raleigh, regretfully announces the passing of their son, father and brother. Eric at last found peace that for so long eluded him on Friday, January 29, 2016, at age 37, following a long and arduous struggle with addiction.

Eric was born January 6, 1978 in Rochester, MN. Left behind are his parents, Bob and Melissa Noderer of Cary, NC; his beloved daughter, Lauren K. Wright of Raleigh; his sister, Leah Noderer Damron, and family in Mequon, WI; and his brother, Adam T. Noderer and family of Cincinnati, OH.

Eric attended high school at Blue Ridge School in St. George, VA. He was an ice hockey player from the time he was four years old until he was a young adult, and remained so much a fan of the sport that he named his beloved puppy Ogie Ogilthorpe, after the character in the movie Slap Shot. He was a skilled plumber, an avid reader, a novice surfer, and loved all genres of music.

Eric also lived for a time in South Florida and New York City. He left behind many dear friends in both places, as well as in Raleigh. As his family, we are grateful for and wish to sincerely thank these wonderful souls, many of whom stood by our son and brother during the times when he most needed a friend. We are also thankful that so many of his friends have been in touch to share in our grief, and also share their memories of him. Over and over again we have heard Eric described as kind, caring, and compassionate -- a spiritual, beautiful soul. Despite his own battle with addiction, several noted that at times Eric lent great support to them in their most dire hours, offering words of comfort and encouragement, usually with his signature screwball, off the wall sense of humor. Stories of Eric's oftentimes irreverent, sometimes audacious, and always hilarious antics have had us laughing through our tears these past few days, and we cannot begin to describe how grateful we are that people have taken the time to share them with us.

We know that addiction knows no boundaries; it is not one to discriminate. The Noderer family deeply appreciates the dedication and care that North Carolina Recovery Services (NCRSS) provides for their clients, to help them with their recovery efforts.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to honor Eric's life, may be made to NCRSS, ATTN: Clara Downing Bain, 1100 Navaho Drive, Suite #125 Raleigh, NC 27609.

Please join our family for a memorial service to honor Eric this Friday, February 5th at the Brown-Wynn Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Road, Cary, NC. Visitation is from 10:00-11:00am and the memorial service is at 11:00 am.

Dear Noderer Family ,
I don't know you, but I saw this through a high school classmate who knows your family. I am profoundly sorry to know of your loss. I lost my son to the same horrible disease eight years ago at the age of 28. Losing a child causes pain like no other, and the loss of any young person is a tragedy. I wish you strength to get through this most difficult time, and I wish you peace on your journey. There are no words that can help, but I hope knowing that so many people care will bring you comfort. May God be with you.

Eric- in reality life is short for all of us and moves so fast although I had only wished yours wouldn't of been this short. I heard someone in the rooms say -to get closer to heaven sometimes you have to move away from hell. And with that I can keep in mind that even though you are not here, you are away from that hell. Thinking of you and may you rest in paradise. Prayers of comfort to your loved ones. And my friend, if I know one thing about you bud, you will watch over the struggling addict still out there since your love to those in need was enormous. I am grateful I was able to have known you.

Dear Melissa & family. I have never met your beautiful son. The shares and the photos give me a glimpse of his life. He was loved and will be missed by all. We have a South Florida connection through him because of his time at Fern House in WPB. I think Eric had just left and my son had just entered. My son has been in and out of there many times since that first visit and I think that was four or five years ago. Eric was highly spoken of there even after he left. May he rest in peace. May you always remember "It is not a matter of love but illness." Because we all know if love could cure this then no parent would have to endure this. I pray for your comfort today and the coming months. Much love to you and your family.

As I read this on Tuesday I was also grieving the loss of a lifetime friend from addiction. Nancy's obit was a tiny paragraph printed the same day. I broke out in tears (at work) when I read that "Addiction knows no Boundaries and is not one to discriminate." This truly helped me accept the tragic death of my friend. They are now both finally at Peace.

Dear family of Eric, My heart goes out to you. I do not know you or your son. However, I admire your willingness to publish in the newspaper the fact that your son is at peace after his struggle with addiction. Addiction is everywhere and as you may know, affects probably millions of people. People need to see addicts like your son who are/can be caring, giving adults. My sympathy and prayers are with you.

Although news of Eric's passing truly saddens me, I'm well aware of the insidious nature of addiction. This is yet another tragic remind to value life & live everyday to the fullest. Eric lived life to the fullest when he was healthy & happy and I love him for that. He also showed me there is humor to found during our darkest hours & for that I am extremely appreciative of our friendship and the time I was able to spend with him on this earth. Godspeed dude, you'll be forever missed.

Eric will always be in my heart. Thinking back over the last few weeks I felt his heart and soul, especially the last day he stopped as he was leaving and said 'good bye' to me. I will remember that day where he took time out to care and wish me a good week. He will be greatly missed. I am praying for you and your family. May God be in control.

About 3 years ago Eric spent the day at our home with our son. During that time, we enjoyed sitting on the porch. He told me stories of his hockey playing youth, his daughter and his desire to seek recovery. Later in the day, Eric contacted his father and I drove him to meet him. Eric was then considering going to The Healing Place. I will treasure the hours I was lucky enough to spend with your beloved, Eric. It was a pleasure to know him.
