Raleigh, North Carolina - Franklin Kent Burns of Raleigh died on December 29th. He was born in Winston-Salem on September 2, 1929 and graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School. He was a 1950 Graduate of Duke University, as well as, a 1955 honors Graduate of the University of North Carolina Law School. Mr. Burns served as Revisor of Statutes and Assistant Attorney General of North Carolina before entering private practice of law. He was a partner in the Raleigh Law Firm of Boyce, Mitchell, Burns & Smith and later Burns, Day and Presnel. He was a member of the Wake County and North Carolina Bar Association as well as the North Carolina State Bar. During the Korean War, he served as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church and served as lay leader of that church. He taught Sunday school over 50 years. He was active in attending and in leadership roles in Bible Study Fellowship and in the Monday Night Men's Bible Study at Providence Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his wife and love of his life of 67 years, Ann Linville Burns. He is survived by his daughter, Jean B. Hughes and her husband Tolly of Wilmington, NC; son Franklin K. Burns,Jr. and wife Andrea of Rockville, MD; his grandchildren Margaret Ann Hughes Gonella, (John), Trey Hughes, (Jennie), Emma Burns and five great grandchildren Felix, Hughes and Ellis Gonella, Emory and Bettner Hughes. He is also survived by a niece, Kathy Linville Robinson, (Neal) and a nephew Richard Hines Linville, (Kathy) of Winston Salem. There will be a Memorial Service at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church on Sunday, January 8th at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends in the parlor or fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 6096 Raleigh, NC 27628 or to the charity of one's choice.
