Frank Barick Obituary

Frank Butcher Barick

Raleigh

Frank Butcher Barick (originally Baricska) passed away peacefully at his home with his son, Brad, and daughter-in-law, Rebecca, by his side on June 18, 2017. Frank was born in Hungary on March 21, 1919, to the late Joseph Baricska and Elizabeth Papp. He landed on Ellis Island in 1922, having made the ocean voyage with his 16 year old brother, Pete, to join his mother and brother, Paul, who had arrived earlier.

Having grown up in Mountaindale, NY he graduated from Mountaindale Union High School in 1936. He earned his BS degree in Forest Management and MS degree in Forest Wildlife Management from Syracuse University in 1943 where he was also an instructor and research fellow, teaching zoology from 1941-1947.

He worked for the Pennsylvania Game Commission from 1947-1949, where he developed long-range management plans for game lands.

In 1949, he was hired by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) as Project Leader for implementing a statewide big game restoration program to repopulate the waning deer herds. He directed the humane trapping of deer in other states which were reintroduced to specific areas for optimal acclimation. After promotion to Chief of the Game Division, he administered statewide wildlife management and conducted environmental impact studies to assure proper recognition of wildlife conservation concerns. In 1972 he was the recipient of the Governor's award in Wildlife Conservation.

Later, as the initial Chief of the newly created Environmental Division, he assisted Federal, State and local agencies as well as private developers in modifying their programs to be in consonance with the Commission's wildlife conservation program. He is credited with developing the concept of stream restoration as a substitute for channelization and created regulations for land use in Coastal counties, defining activities adversely impacting fish and wildlife conservation, now used nation-wide. He established the Commission's Endangered Species Program.

Prior to his retirement, Frank began planting Christmas trees on his family farm to have as a hobby in his golden years. As a result Back-Acher's Christmas Tree Farm was founded in 1982 and still serves loyal third generation customers in the Tri-City area.

During the Hungarian Uprising in 1956, Frank sponsored families coming to America. He was one of the founding members and president of the Hungarian Club and hosted the annual club picnic on his farm where the Hungarian culture is celebrated with authentic food and music.

Frank was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cary. He enjoyed extensive world travel, wood working, photography, quail hunting and family gatherings.

Frank is preceded in death by wives, Elizabeth Barick (Betty, mother of his three children) and Dorothy (Dot) Barick; son, Bruce Barick; step-father, Louis Butcher; brothers, Pete Domonkos, Paul Domonkos and John Butcher.

He is survived by son, Dr. Bradford Barick and wife, Rebecca Avery; daughter, Marion Tilley; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Bruce Barick (Farideh); grandchildren, Christopher Barick and wife, Wendy, Nicholas Barick, Elham Barick Zelickman and husband, Tom, Roya Barick, Shannon Poissant and husband, Phil, Andrea Granger and husband, Gary, Chip Tilley and wife, Sorasmey and Jonathon Tilley; ten great- grandchildren; special niece, Betty Chesner and husband, Don; other relatives and dear friend, Anne Zimmermann.

We wish to acknowledge our gratitude for the loving in-home caregivers, Kim Vazquez, Hollie Queen and Angela James, who made Frank's last days full of love, laughter and continued adventure.

Frank left the world a better place than he found it; his was truly a life well lived.

In lieu of flowers, Frank requested that donations be made to The North Carolina Wildlife Federation at www.ncwf.org/support-ncwf/ or The Organization for Autism Research http://researchautism.org/get-involved/make-a-gift/donate/

Memorial Service arrangements are pending and will be posted on Frank's public Facebook page or you may inquire by emailing:

Frank was a true friend of quail and other wildlife. He was a gentleman in every aspect of life. He leaves a void that will take many to fill. May he rest from his labor and know that his good deeds follow him and he lives in your hearts. We share your grief. Dean & Jane Ramey

Uncle Frank was my uncle by marriage to Margaret Domonkos Bowne. He was a favorite uncle that we enjoyed many fun family times with on the farm for picnics, birthday parties, pig roasts, and many other events he hosted. He was truly a remarkable and compassionate man to his family and extended family. Many times in earlier days when we were traveling from Pensacola to New Jersey to visit Paul and Elsie Domonkos, Uncle Frank would host us over night giving us a break from a very long trip. He knew at that time we did not have the a finances to stay in a motel. What a blessing he and Aunt Betty were in those days. Uncle Frank will be truly missed by me and my family. We loved more than you could know.

If tears could build a stairway, and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to Heaven and bring you home to me.... One of my favorite feelings, thoughts and energy is laughing with you, talking with you, holding hands with you, hearing you say "I love you more!", knowing how much I love you and you love me and how much I enjoy and appreciate your existence both in the physical and celestial realm. Love is the best and most beautiful thing in the world. It cannot be seen or even heard but it is felt with the heart.... It is not love until it is given away... you did that generously... I will always be your little Punkin Princess and you will ALWAYS be my King, my Prince, my Knight in shining armor - forever close no matter if you are partying with Momma and Nick in heaven, in my memories, in my sleep when you speak to me or as your angelic spirit watches over me night and day. You asked if Momma ever regretted the divorce. Of course, she did! You two are reunited now in the beauty of the love you once knew - all else forgiven and forgotten. You asked me about your Poppa in Hungary, you are now with him and you two can reunite in peace and in love and ask him all the questions you never had the opportunity to on earth. I suspect you and Uncle Paul are enjoying a little Palinka over a pig roast and laughing the evenings away. You kept asking me what your purpose on earth was toward the end.... Well Poppa.... I suspect it was to be an example to all of us on how to live life to the fullest, to find our blessings in nature, to believe, to grow "old" graciously and to die with dignity. Blessings and love to you Poppa... Your Little Punkin - I love you the mostest and to the moon and Milky Way and back... Always with you... as you are always with me... XXOO

My father was the greatest! He taught me things beyond the imagination and we were a great team on the farm...going way back to when we had horses, dairy and beef animals, pigs, chickens, cutting pulp wood, clearing land, getting in hay for the animals, etc. Dad led the way to show and teach me how to do things correctly. On the farm, we would hunt quail and dove. He encouraged and supported me in all my education endeavors. Later, he would come to my home in WI to hunt grouse and woodcock. After he started the Christmas tree farm, we would work together to shape the trees and serve all the customers in cutting, shaking and wrapping the trees during the Christmas sales. We did so much together, words cannot express the love, respect, and admiration I have for Dad. Where as, he will be missed by all, no one could miss him more than me. I LOVE YOU DAD, REST IN PEACE!

Pop, I miss you already. You've never said an unkind word to me. You showered me with love and I'm so grateful that I was immersed into your life in your final years. I learned so much from you and will always remember how grateful you were for every blessing in your life. I'll treasure our Weds night double dates with you and Anne. You were such a delight. I'm grateful you didn't suffer and got to spend all your days on your farm, exactly as you wanted. I'll think of you every day and love you forever.
