George was a colleague and friend for 35 years, an age contemporary, an exceptionally warm human being with an amazing ability to see the humor in everything, and the most gifted psychiatrist I ever encountered -- an excellent therapist as well as so up on meds and their interactions that he literally saved two of my clients' lives and was extremely effective in finding protocols people who were med-averse but needed something would follow. His death is a tragic loss, for his family and his professional and social communities. For Nancy, Sarah, and Lucas, he always spoke of you with great love and affection. I hope his memory will always be a blessing and a comfort to you.

I met Dr. Stephens seven years ago after my grandmother passed. I hadn't slept in weeks and was in a terrible place. His calm, kind presence was such a balm at that time, as was his counsel over the years. Please accept my condolences on your loss.

Dear Mrs.Stephens, Sarah, Lucas and grandchildren,
My sincere condolences for your loss. When I received the certified letter , I got nervous. I had been his patient for over 27 years. He was kind, compassionate , honest, he was the voice of reason , the one I listened to, the one who never gave up on me, the one that said and did what was in my best interest to help me. I had just seen him for my regular visit. As always his last words were “Dawn you call me if you need me before our next appt. “ I said “ you know I will and I appreciate it..... I’ll be seeing you again soon”.
Mrs.Stephens I’ve called many times after hours and you were always kind. I can remember you saying hold on “ George!!!! phone for you”. Sarah and Lucas there were times you answered too.
Lucas he shared with me about the time he cut the tree down in the yard and how it landed right on the house . You had said something humorous to say about it. He spoke of how proud he was of you and Sarah. He’d share his love of spending family time with you all on the beach island house.
I’d just told him recently I’d be lost when he retired. He chuckled as he often did.
He helped me a great deal over 27 years. Was always available for emergency calls at home.
He was a great doctor. He will be missed.
When there are no words..... know the silences are carrying all the thoughts and prayers of all who love you.
Sincerely.
Dawn Evans ( patient of 27 years)

I'm very sorry for your loss. I will always remember George from my childhood. Wondering what he was building in his workshop and always being impressed by the Porsche. He's car is what led to my love of cars today. He will always be remembered and he had an impression on so many lives. May his memory always be with you.
Love,
Aaron and Rena

Dear Nancy,
As everyone, I was surprised to hear that George had passed away. There is no way to extend enough condolences to you and your family. George and I were Co-Captains of our football team at Marist and he was always bigger, much stronger and much smarter than the rest of us. Although we had lost touch through the years, we had briefly connected about our last reunion and our mutual interest in woodworking. George was a very special person and it was so inspiring to read some of his patient’s comments. Please know that our entire Marist class will share your loss as he was one of the best, ever!

Today I received a certified piece of mail from Dr. Stephens office. I was shocked and saddened to learn of his sudden recent death. I have known him for many years, in my office visits with him. I regard him as a true friend, in whom I confided many things. He helped me through some rough patches in my life, for which I will always be grateful. I will definitely miss him.

Nancy, Lucas, and Sarah,
We were saddened to hear of George’s passing. Our heartfelt condolences to you all. I can’t remember a time when he wasn’t a part of the neighborhood. It won’t be the same without his presence.

My heart is broken. Dr. Stephens was my calm in the storm of life. He was a compassionate Psychiatrist, spent time with his patients and never seemed to be rushed. The time you spent with him was sacred. He was honest, attentive and caring. If I am overwhelmed at his passing, I can't imagine the grief that his beloved family is experiencing. He spoke of his family with such a spark that I know you were all dearly loved. I will miss comparing notes on my husbands carpentry projects with his own. Blessings to his family and may you know peace in this very upsetting time.

Just received the letter. I thought, he’s finally retiring. Just shocked and saddened by learning of his passing. He’s been my Doctor since we moved to NC in 2004.
He was the most kind and considerate doctor and man. I will miss him so much.
My kindest regards to his family and his dog who he talked about and loved so much. So sorry.

Nancy, So sorry to hear of George's death. Curious that I had been thinking of trying to get in touch with him over the last month. I really appreciated the recommendation that donations go to the Democratic Party. Much of my free income goes there anyway. My best regards, Bob Mosher

When I received a letter today from George's office I assumed he was writing me to tell me of his retirement. Needless to say, I was shocked and saddened to learn of his passing. I have known George for some 30 years as his classmate in medical school, and later on a professional basis. He was a kind and gentle soul, and a compassionate and caring physician. He is sorely missed.
