Harry Galifianakis Obituary

Harry Galifianakis

Wilkesboro

On August 3rd, 1935 in Durham, North Carolina, Harry Galifianakis was born. The son of two immigrant parents, Sophia Kastrinakis Galifianakis and Emmanual Galifianakis, he entered this world and brought with him a heart full of love, joy, and laughter. He was baptized in the Greek Orthodox Church and remained a devoted follower of Jesus' teachings throughout his life. At a very early age, Harry started working at his father's restaurant that served the African American community in Durham. Depending on which brother you ask, he was behind the lunch counter around the age of 8, although Harry would say it was age 4. Being in the middle of five brothers, Harry came by his competitive spirit honestly. That competitive spirit drove him to play football at NC State University. And as most of you knew, he was the most athletic of the brothers, easily beating them at sports such as tennis, golf, ping-pong, and gin rummy. He left college early and joined the U.S. Navy. After serving in the Navy, his entrepreneur spirit took him back to Durham/Chapel Hill, where he opened a jazz club, The Tempo Room. In the following years he worked various sales jobs, all the while dreaming of opening a hot dog stand. A dream that he never realized but kept alive until the end.

While in Durham, an event occurred that would forever change his trajectory. He met a blonde powerhouse named Mary Frances Cashion. As both have said repeatedly, they were never really that serious, until they got married May 13, 1966. And from that day on, Mary Frances was by his side as his best friend, confidant and dance partner. In early 1967 the newlyweds moved to Wilkesboro and Harry went to work for her father at Cashion Oil Company. He immediately started assimilating into the Wilkes County community by joining the Rotary Club in May,1967 where his unwavering dedication continued throughout his life. They attended the North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church.

During his time in the oil business, he served as Vice President of the North Carolina Oil Jobbers and took over ownership of Cashion Oil and Eller & Huffman until his retirement in the early 2000's. He quickly realized that at age 70, he as was too young to retire and went to work for Brame Huie Pharmacy, delivering medicine and smiles to the home-bound community. His last job, and one that he was particularly proud of, was serving on the Board of Directors of Wilkes Hardware. Although the legitimacy of that position was debated and questioned to this day, he faithfully occupied his rocker at the front of the store, serving as the official customer greeter.

He loved his community dearly and proved it by volunteering and supporting the community in numerous ways including serving as a member of the Wilkes Board of Elections and the Wilkes YMCA, as a scout leader and supporter of Troop 336, a consistent blood donor to the Red Cross, and a member of and former president of the Wilkes Rotary Club, where he was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. He participated in community theater, landing roles as "Rabbi" in Fiddler on the Roof and "Moonface Martin" in Anything Goes. He was also eligible to join the Screen Actors Guild. With acting, as well as about anything thing else in his life, he rarely followed a script. He also coached youth football and was the town's Santa Claus for many years. Now that he is no longer residing on Edgewood Drive, we can finally share with you that he was and is indeed the real Santa Claus.

With all the love Harry had for his brothers, extended family and friends, he had an unlimited supply left for his wife and their three children, their spouses, and his grandchildren. He was the personification of what true love is and he ensured he passed that knowledge onto his kids. He adored them and never, ever stopped supporting and believing in them and taught them how to love, laugh, and cry. He taught them to love everyone. He taught them that hate was easy, and love was hard, but love is the key to happiness. He welcomed their spouses as his children, not as in-laws. And oh, how he loved his grandchildren. With the arrival of each grandchild, his heart and happiness grew bigger. The man proved that happiness has no boundaries if you allow yourself to welcome it into your heart.

The pain we are all feeling pales in comparison to the love and memories we will carry with us the rest of our lives. We know he is somewhere high above us, proudly standing behind his hot dog stand serving up love, happiness, and that special smile of his. We are all better for being a part of Harry's life. We will miss and love forever "Harry, "Mr. G", "HG", "Uncle Harry", "Dad", "PaPou" and "Uncle Bubbles".

Harry Galifianakis died at his home on Sunday, July 15, 2018. He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances, sons Greg and Gia of North Carolina, Zach and Quinn of California, and daughter Merritt and Palmer Owings of South Carolina; Brothers Nick and Louise of Durham, NC, Mike and Frances of Atlanta, GA, Pete of Washington, DC, and John and Helen of NY; Grandchildren Palmer, Susannah, Olivia, Franklin, and Rufus; and sister-in-law Susannah Cashion of Florida; as well as numerous nephews, nieces and great nephews and nieces.

Memorial service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, July 21 at The Walker Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wilkes ADEP-Greater Community Fund, Communities in School or the YMCA of Wilkes County. To honor Harry, you may also go out today and share a smile, say hello to a stranger or reach out and hug your neighbor. It would have made him so happy.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Harry's passing. What a special man! He began a tradition of kissing the top of my head from the day I was baptized in 1969 and going on throughout my life whenever I saw him. In more recent years, I had to kneel a little so he could carry out the task but I wouldn't trade it for anything! I am proud to have grown up with this family and such a kind and caring individual as Harry. I love you all and you will remain in my prayers.

I also have many wonderful memories of Harry...one which I will always remember fondly. We would have breakfast at the same restaurant quite a few years ago and when I walked through the door, he would sing Sweet Lorraine ...a song from long ago. July 20, 2018

Dear Mary Francis, Greg, Zack, Merritt and Susannah. Virginia and I were saddened to hear Harry had died. He is truly one of those people I expected to see whenever I returned to Wilkes. We saw Harry two years ago delivering medication when Virginia was helping Belle look for a place to live . I saw him this last April at Merlefest watching one of the Rotary entrances. Harry always had a good word which brought a smile and made you feel better. Even though I didnt see Harry often I always considered him a friend and close to my heart. When I heard the news I wept. Please know we have all of you in our prayers and will for the time to come. Subdue your regrets and embellish your memories. They will sustain you. God has a way of giving you great peace over time. We love you all and regret we cannot be there for Harrys service. May God give you much peace. Syd and Virginia PS I look forward to a hot dog at Harrys stand.

Dearest Ms Mary Frances and family,
My heartfelt condolences go out to you all. I was deeply saddened to hear of Mr Gs passing. Whenever I saw him when I was younger he always brought a smile to my face, and my heart. I am sad that I hadnt seen any of you in the last 20 years, but whenever in all this time I would see the Galifianakis name (or hear it in a song), I would always remember with a chuckle how Mr G and I first introduced ourselves (I believe it was at a floating dinner party that a few of us would take part in while in high school): Hello, I am Mr Galifianakis....it starts with a gal, and ends with a kiss.
That still makes me smile to this day. I am very grateful to have known him. He made the world a better place.
Sending much love.

Harry did not have a pretentious bone in his body--everyone was good enough for a hearty hug and walked away feeling special. I was not a popular kid in school and, even though we were kin, it was through his marriage to Mary Francis (or "Sister" as my Mom's family knew her by), but Harry always noticed when I was at church and later came home for a visit and gave me a big smile and sometimes would yell his greeting across the narthex. "Sister," Zach, Greg, and Merit, may God turn every tear into a smile as your memories of your husband and father flow in the weeks and months to come. Mom is now 90 and lives with us in Mooresville, but she sends her sympathies to "Sister."

What a perfectly written tribute to a wonderful man. I cried and laughed at the same time. I can only second the many beautiful things already said about him. I grew up as his neighbor and he ALWAYS, ALWAYS greeted me with a hug and a sweet word throughout the years. He was this way I know with everyone he met ,but he made me feel as if I was the most special person he had seen all day~ There are few people left in this world that I want to run toward instead of away from..... Harry was one of those few people. My life is richer and brighter and blessed to have been in his world. I will miss EVERYTHING about him but will carry his love of life with me~ It's the least I can do ~ we all should live like he did with LOVE ,LAUGHTER and A SMILE ~

Harry's obituary says it all. I moved to Wilkes County ten years ago and had the pleasure of getting to know Harry and Mary Frances at Wilkesboro Presbyterian Chapel. I felt an immediate connection to both of them (which is most likely the experience of everyone who knew them). Every time I ever spoke with Harry, he made me feel like I was the most important person in the world. He was just that way. He gave me his undivided attention and of course always shared his infectious smile and uplifting spirit. Mary Frances stood softly beside him, and you could feel and literally see how she adored him. As Anne Farmer mentioned in her comments, we are holding a bridal shower at the Chapel on Saturday at the same time as Harry's service. I am so sorry to miss this event. Please know that I am so grateful that my life's path crossed Harry's life's path. He touched my spirit and my heart. If we all would live like Harry lived his life, the world would have much less suffering.

Dear Mary Francis and Family all, Our deepest sympathy and love to you. Every memory of "Mr. Give-a-gal-a-kiss" makes us smile and we'll cherish them. We loved catching up on family news on the old dirt road or around the stove at Wilkes Hardware. Thank you for rides in the convertible and sharing the "G" pew at church. God bless you all. Kalinikta, Harry!

July 19, 2018

When I think of the phrase, "bigger than life," Harry comes to mind. Harry had the unique ability to make each individual he encountered feel special, like a true friend. His warmth and genuine love embraced all he encountered and multitudes considered him a special friend. I loved his Sunday greetings and though years might pass in between seeing him (one I left "home"), he picked up right where we left off as though I'd seen him the day before. The Ogilvies looked forward to "Harry encounters." Harry was a wonderful friend to my dad, sensing whether his humor or deep thought were more appropriate for the day's interaction. Harry was one of less than a handful of church members who faithfully visited my mom once Alzheimer's precluded regular church attendance. His most recent visit, as usual, brought great joy to us. Finally, Harry was a dear friend to my brother, opening his heart to him and sharing time with him, most recently in his darkest hours. Harry was one of a kind, a gift to Wilkes County and each of us. It is no wonder that his heart gave out -- it received a greater workout than most hearts have had to endure. Sister, Greg, Zach, and Merritt, he loved each of you so. Thank you for sharing him with us. I have no doubt that we sapped his energy from time to time. You each are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope the impact Harry made on so many others, your memories, your love for each other, and your faith bring you strength in the days to come.

I met Harry when I worked at Brame Huie Pharmacy. My husband knows him from delivering propane to his house. Both of us agree that we have never met a person like Harry, who was always kind, always in a good mood and genuinely cared about people and what they had to say. I am glad for Harry that he can rest with Jesus now, but in this world he will leave a big void.

Just thinking of Harry brings a smile to my face. His big personality, always a smile on his face. I have fond memories years ago hanging out in Harrys dusty oil office shooting the breeze, I always paid the bill in person so I could see him. How you doing boy?! was his standard opening in a way only Harry could say it.

A special man I hope to see again one day. All my prayers for the family in this difficult time.

We had the pleasure of knowing Harry from the YMCA I was an employee there and Lou was a regular member just like Harry! I worked all different shifts and I can remember the regular guys come in the morning and call me Sarge when I did the morning water aerobic or swim lessons. I remember how proud he was the day he got his new car...We will miss him very much...our thoughts and prayers are with Mary Francis and family.

Harry was the best natured man. I met Harry when I worked at Artistic Academy. He loved his pedicures. He was such a pleasure to have at the school. One day he stopped by and showed me his convertible that Zach had given him. He loved that car. I enjoyed listening to his adventures in moves that He and Zach appeared in.
Heaven has gained a bright and shinning angel. Prayers for his beloved family. All that met Harry knew they were blessed to have known him.

I want to say Heaven got a special angle when Harry got there. I waited on Harry at Dale's for many years and got to know his wife & family. They are wonderful people and this world needs more like them. Harry always had a smile and was happy and I never seen him upset. He loved everyone and I feel everyone loved him. He was one in a lifetime that we meet that is always the same each day. He was what life should be for everyone. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and his precious wife he loved so much. And to Zack when you made it to your spot in movies your daddy was one more happy proud daddy. I will never forget as long as I live that day and how proud he was. So Zack you keep up the great work and all of us here in Wilkes is proud of you to. Everytime I see garlic I think of the mornings he'd come in Dale's & ask me if I smelled his garlic from the night before he'd say I know you'll find me a mint or something before the breakfast gang of Ted Jim FD Harvey got there. He will forever be special to me he made my day many days with his spirit and Jim said it right to give someone a hug in memory of Harry and you'd be honoring him. He's gone to his new home and God will have many rewards for the man he is & the life he lived here on Earth. He sure done goodness to others as God would have us to do. He will never be forgotten. Peace of mind and comfort and love to you all. Take care of Mary Frances. Love you all. Debbie Hayworth

When I moved here from Gaston County, Harry was one of the first breaths of fresh air that I had the joy to meet. He seemed full of boundless energy with a rakish sense of humor, and a passion for life. He wasn't afraid to ask questions during our Sunday school hour, always making sure the we Presbyterians knew how Greek he really was. And, boy was he...there's that love for life again. That love he felt for life, felt for family and friends as well. He always made me feel like I had his undivided attention and he cared about me as a person. I haven't talked with him recently, but the image of him rocking beside the woodstove at the original hardware store in North Wilkesboro this past winter, will stay with me forever. I shall always smile when I think of you, Harry.
I am so sorry that I cannot participate in the memorial service. Looking to the future, we ladies of the Presbyterian Chapel are honoring one of our members with a wedding shower at the same time of the service. She will be beginning her future with her husband, as Harry is beginning to discover another life. I will regret not being there, but I feel good about honoring a commitment.
Please know that my thoughts and prayers will be with the family and all those grieving his loss.

I met Harry about twenty years ago when I went to work at the Wilkes County Board of Elections. I knew right away he was someone I would like. He became a frequent visitor to the office and was a dedicated precinct worker at the Wilkesboro #1 Precinct. He loved working the polls and the other precinct workers loved him. He handled all the people who came in and were upset. They all said he knew how to deal with people and by the time they left they were no longer irate.
I would see Harry out and about in town and he always had a humorous story to share. About the "old folks" he helped at the pharmacy, about his days as a salesman and about his family. He always said his wife was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. He had stories about his family and his small roles in films that Zach was doing.
One thing about Harry, he had no respect of person. He treated everyone with love and compassion. After I told him my daughter was working part-time at the Smokehouse while in college, he would go by and talk to and encourage her. He was a good friend to a lot of people and he will be truly missed. Love to all the family.

A Fallen Limb - author unknown

A limb has fallen from the family tree; I keep hearing a voice that says, "Grieve not for me."
Remember the best times, the laughter, the song; the good life I lived while I was strong.
Continue my heritage, I'm counting on you; keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through.
My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest; remembering all, how I truly was blessed.
Continue traditions, no matter how small; go on with your life, don't worry about falls.
I miss you all dearly, so keep up your chin; until the day comes when we're together again.

Harry G - truly a fine gentleman and friend - who loved his family; and loved his community. We're missing you today, kind sir!
