Harvey S. Zelon

Harvey Seth Zelon, 64, passed away Tuesday at his home.
Harvey was devoted to his family and helping others. He did so in many ways, beginning with his time teaching Science in a New York inner city Middle School. He gave his time to the Carrboro community as a volunteer: 11 years as a paramedic, 10 years as a firefighter and as captain of the hazardous materials team for one year. He was a volunteer police officer for U.N.C. and Durham. When he retired from Research Triangle Institute after twenty years, he became a full time officer with the Durham Police Department, and became an investigator in 2009.
Harvey was born in Brooklyn, NY on January 25, 1946. and grew up in Durham, where he was active in volunteer activities and earned his Ner Tamid award as a Boy Scout. He graduated from Durham High School in 1963, and received his undergraduate degree from Penn Morton College. He received his Masters Degree in Biology from Hofstra University, and a Masters Degree in Public Health Administration from U.N.C.
His family, who will miss his smile, sense of humor, and love, include his wife, Brenda Zelon, and the children of his heart Abby Markowitsch, and her husband, Paul, and Eric Futrelle; his mother, Doris Zelon, and his sister, Laurie Zelon; his brother-in-law, David George; and his nephews, Jeremy and Daniel George, and their wives, Alice Park and Elisabeth George, Nadine Echerd, Gerald Echerd, Joan and Geoff Yount, Deborah and Joe McCall, and Charles and Cindi Echerd, and their children will miss Harvey and are grateful he was a part of their lives.
Services will be held on June 4, at noon at Hillsong Church in Chapel Hill.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the church’s building fund.
