Henry Ellis Mattox

August 20, 1930 - February 24, 2016

Chapel Hill

Henry was a career Foreign Service officer, a dedicated college teacher of history, a writer of many books and articles, a co-founder of the online journal "American Diplomacy" (observing its 20th anniversary), and a

Fulbright professor in Nigeria.

He was awarded an MA, Ole Miss; an MA, Harvard; and a PhD, UNC.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Shelley Mattox; a daughter, Rosalind Mattox Kuhn; 2 sons, Richard Mattox and Robert Mattox; a sister, Linda Sims; 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Henry was a Renaissance man of wry wit, a man of his word, and a true Southern gentleman who was esteemed and well loved.

A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, March 31 from 2:30 - 4:30 PM at the North Carolina Botanical Gardens in Chapel Hill. Afternoon tea will be served. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Animal Protection Society.
