Henry McKinnon Obituary

Judge Henry Alexander “Sandy” McKinnon, Jr., 88, of Lumberton died Monday afternoon, January 10, 2011 in Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
He was born November 16, 1922 in Maxton, NC, the oldest son of the late Henry A. and Margaret Borden McKinnon.
He attended the Maxton and Lumberton schools, graduating from high school in 1939. Mr. McKinnon entered Duke University in 1939 and received an A. B. degree in January 1943. He later returned to Duke Law School in January 1946. After serving in the U.S. Army, he received the L. L. B. degree in June 1947.
Mr. McKinnon was on active duty in the U.S. Army from April 1943 to November 1945; serving in the 34th Infantry Division in Italian Campaigns from Nov. 1943 until the end of the World War II, reaching the rank of Master Sergeant.
Judge McKinnon was admitted to the N. C. Bar September 1947, and practiced law in Lumberton with his father in firms of McKinnon & Seawell and McKinnon & McKinnon until 1958. He was appointed Resident Superior Court Judge for the 16th Judicial District of N.C. April 15, 1958; and served until his retirement on November 1, 1980; afterwards he served as Emergency Judge until 1994.
Mr. McKinnon was a long time member of the Chestnut Street UMC where he had served as a teacher of the Wesley Sunday School class and had served on various committees of the church.
His interest and hobbies were hunting, fishing and local history research. He was a long time member of the North State Game Club of which he had served as president.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 13, 2011 from the Chestnut Street UNC with the Revs. Steve Little and Jimmy R. Tatum officiating. Private interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Maxton, directed by Revels Funeral Home of Lumberton.
Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Martha Bowman McKinnon, of Lumberton. Also surviving are a brother, John B. McKinnon, of Winston-Salem; two sisters-in-law, Oriana McKinnon, Norfolk, VA and Mary Kime Harris, Goose Creek, SC; several nieces and nephews, Arnold Borden McKinnon, Jr., Colin McArthur McKinnon, Henry Alexander McKinnon III, Alexander J. McKinnon, Margaret McKinnon Gardner, Grace M. Andringa, Betty Kime Gray, Earl Bowman, Ann Fittzsimmons, Martha Kime Pittman, Debra Harris, Carey O’Rilley, and a special friend, Melissa Howell.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Arnold B. McKinnon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Chestnut Street UMC Building Fund, P. O. Box 1464, Lumberton, NC 28359 or to the donor’s choice of charity.
