Henry Wood Obituary

Henry Clinton Wood IV
June 8, 1944 - August 4, 2022
Raleigh, North Carolina - Henry C. Wood IV passed away peacefully at home on August 4, 2022, surrounded by his family. He was born June 8, 1944, to the late Henry Clinton Wood III and Emma Kate Vance Wood of Bristol, Tennessee.
Henry is survived by his wife Nancie Blecharczyk Wood, his son Michael Wood (Michelle) of Avon, CT, daughter Susan Wood Barry (Bill), and grandson Wilson of Chapel Hill, NC. He was predeceased by his son, Derick Wood. He was the brother of Kitty Wood Sullivan (Larry) of Tampa Fl. And Jane Wood Mayo (Claxton) of Knoxville, TN, along with many nieces and nephews.
Henry graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with a degree in psychology. He enjoyed coaching people as much as being in the North Carolina mountains. He meshed both interests by serving as a forest firefighter in the National Park Service, and a Job Corps counselor in Brevard, NC for many years.
As a young man, he enjoyed knowing how things were made. When digital watches came into popularity in the 1970s, Henry took it upon himself to learn everything about the new technology. Once mastered, he opened, owned, and operated multiple Precision Quartz watch repair shops in Raleigh and Cary for over 40 years. Henry also co-owned Sparrowood Jewelers in Olde Raleigh Village as a gemologist.
In his retirement, Henry enjoyed his family, traveling, numerous bridge club groups, working in his yard, perfecting his billiard skills, and beating his friends in a weekly poker game. His lifelong interest in nature and reptiles led him to volunteer at the North Carolina Museum of Natural History. There he helped to care for and teach visitors about the reptiles in residence. Henry also assisted in a grant to track endangered Timber rattlesnakes in North Carolina. Henry was a very generous person, with a big heart, a quick wit, an incredible memory for detail, and a gift for creating poetry. He always treated people and animals well and believed in doing your personal best. He touched and had a great influence on the lives of many people.
At Henry's request, private arrangements are being provided by Wake Funeral Crematory at a later date. The family suggests any memorial gifts be made to Heartland Hospice Care, 4505 Falls of Neuse Road #650, Raleigh, NC

I just learned of Henry´s passing and I am so very sorry for your loss and the loss to the world. He was a dear friend for many years, teaching me everything I knew about diamonds and gemstones when I was just starting out in the jewelry business. I made it a point to visit Henry at his shops whenever I was in town after moving to Fl. When he retired he came out of retirement to personally set my diamond (purchased at Sparrowood) in my engagement ring. He was a genuinely caring person with a huge heart. He loved his family and nature! He is missed by all who knew him.

Some of my favorite memories with Henry are watching the faces of our summer campers at the Museum as they watched in delight and fascination as Henry fed the snakes. He'd always be sure to let me know what time to expect it so we could take the students to watch and then he'd always come out to talk to us afterwards. Henry was the most genuinely kind soul. His spirit will live on in the fig tree that he gave me from a cutting in his yard. My tree is doing well and I've even planted another from it at my parent's house as well. I'll think of his kindness and gentleness every time I see those trees. Thank you Wood family for sharing your husband and dad and friend with us. He was incredible and will be missed.

My condolences to Nancie and Henry's family. I am a former neighbor and have a beautifully carved wooden bowl that Henry made. He was a talented, caring, and very interesting man who so enjoyed life.

Henry was truly a great person. I had the privilege to get to know him while working on the rattlesnake tracking project. Henry could talk to and relate to absolutely anyone, and he spent time really getting to know, becoming friends with, and helping out the people we worked with. He will really be missed.
