Irene Strowd Obituary

Irene H. Strowd, 92, of Chapel Hill, died December 8th at her home. Mrs. Strowd was married to Fletcher Eugene Strowd, a civic leader and nationally recognized authority on the cultivation of roses, who died in 1991. She was employed for many years by Blue Cross Blue Shield. A long-time member of University Methodist Church and of the Chapel Hill and American Rose Societies, Mrs. Strowd, together with her husband, established and gave to the Town of Chapel Hill the rose garden located in the Community Center Park on Estes Drive.
She is survived by two sisters, Gladis Adams of Chapel Hill, Geraldine Waters of Pinetown; two brothers, Thaddeus Harrison of Wilmington, Leon Harrison of Greenville; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A private interment service will be held at Chapel Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Friends of the Parks and Recreation Department, 200 Plant Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27514, for support of the Gene Strowd Community Rose Garden.
