James Brandenburg Obituary

James Brandenburg

September 1, 1933 - June 18, 2025

Colfax, North Carolina - James Thomas Brandenburg, "Jim," age 91, passed away peacefully at Hospice of High Point.

Born in Moline, Illinois, on September 1, 1933, Jim was the beloved son of the late Russell H. and Gladys Thomas Brandenburg. Jim proudly served as a USAF air traffic controller in Pusan, during the Korean War. After returning home, he graduated from Purdue University, where he met the love of his life, Doris Rhinesperger. They shared a deep and enduring bond for sixty-one years.

Jim was a proud mason, and he had a successful sales career with Alcoa Aluminum which brought him and his family to North Carolina. His ambitions and spirit of entrepreneurship led him to take a leap of faith, founding his own company, Brandco, in Raleigh. With Doris by his side, his business flourished through their shared determination and grit. While an avid traveler of the world, North Carolina remained his true home. He and Doris spent their retirement years living and golfing between the beauty of both the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Oak Island coast. Settling in Colfax to be near family, their life was one of purpose, adventure and unwavering love. They enjoyed numerous events, celebrations and countless patio cocktails. Known for his sharp intellect, generous heart, and engaging curiosity, Jim never met a stranger, and each conversation with him was a meaningful gift.

Jim is survived by son Mark Brandenburg (Jennifer) of Oxford; daughter Tracy Hawkins (Rick) of Summerfield and their three children.

Jim's greatest joy was being grandfather and great-grandfather to Kyle Gassaway (Kelci) of Winston-Salem and their children Emilia and Silas; Ryan Gassaway (Laura) of Cary, and their children Elijah and Lukas; and Hailey Hawkins of Summerfield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Doris, treasured son Scott James Brandenburg, sister Beverly A. Vallarta and brother Robert L. Brandenburg.
