James Grainger Obituary

James Woodrow Grainger, 80, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, April 11, 2007. Born on December 8, 1926; he was the son of the late Dewey and Stella Grainger and husband to the late Bernice Grainger.
Mr. Grainger established J.W. Grainger Grading Company in the early 1960's and was one of the first residential grading companies in Raleigh. With his "sun-up to sun- down" work ethic, he developed and cleared numerous subdivisions and helped grow Raleigh as we know it today, even expanding into commercial grading.
While owning and operating his business, Mr. Grainger was also employed with Greyhound Bus Lines. He enjoyed the many routes to Florida, Virginia and South Carolina, and driving high school classes on their fieldtrips up to New York and Washington, DC. After 35 years of employment and receiving numerous safety and courteous driver awards, Mr. Grainger retired from Greyhound yet continued working full-time with his company. His work ethic was inspirational to many, including his three sons who themselves became owners of grading companies. Mr. Grainger truly was a man to be admired.
A devoted husband and father, he is survived by his sons, James Larry Grainger and wife, Renee, Jerry Keith Grainger and wife, Joyce, Jeff Woodrow Grainger and wife, Mary, all of Raleigh; by his eight grandchildren, Larry Grainger, Jr., Tiffany Grainger Harris, Jason and Jeremy Grainger, Morgan and Natalie Grainger, Mary Candace and Ashleigh Grainger; and by other family and friends.
Family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00-800 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Avenue).
Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Wakeminster Baptist Church with interment to follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
Arrangements with Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park.

Words cant even express the way that I loved my papu! But he is not in pain. That makes me happy. I just hated to see him in the hospital. Hes probaly talkin Grannys ear off.I always loved for him to stop by on the way home from work and eat and talk with us. He was a huge part of my life. He never got to come to one of my horse shows but he always would see the awards that I won and he was so proud of me and my sister. He was such a enjoyment in my life. I am just glad that when he passed that he was not in pain and he took his last breath with my dad and Uncles there with him. I always loved to see him laughing and joking around. He had great stories and awesome jokes! I will never forget the life of my Papu. James Woodrow Grainger

JW was a sweet, kind, hardworking man and he will truly be missed. I thought of him as a second grandfather. But, knowing he's with Bernice brings a smile to my face. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Grainger family.

Thank you all for your love and support. My papoo will be missed forever, but I am at peace that he is with Granny again and knowing that I have two wonderful angels looking over our shoulders. On days that I'm down and don't want to work harder, I'll pick my head up and think of my hard working grandfather and go on.

Dear Grainger family,
JW was one of the nicest and sweetest people I have ever met and was a true family man. Growing up with Morgan and Natalie, he and Bernice were like my own grandparents and they were always so loving to everyone they knew. JW was sometimes of little words, but always had tons of love. He will truely be missed.
Love,
Sara
