I just found out last night, that over a year ago Jim had died. I wish I would have known as I would have attended the services. My sincere apologies to the entire family. Jim gave me my first coaching job at Amherst and launched my career as a high school football coach, eventually leading to me being an offensive coordinator and a state championship. I umpired with Jim and had many good times with him. I lost contact over the years, but he meant a lot to me and taught me so much. My heart goes out to Camille and family. Brad Bailey

Dear Camille and girls, I was so sad to find out that Jim had passed away. We worked together at Middlesex High School for a few short years, but because of Jim, it was always a fun time. We stayed in touch by e-mail, maybe once or twice a year. It occurred to me recently that we hadn't caught up recently, when I discovered that he had left this earth for higher adventures. I'm so glad he was able to see his daughters become such fine women and to spend great times with his grandchildren. He will never be forgotten!

I was saddened to hear of this news and echo the voices that a great leader in education has passed. Dr. Hedrick was principal when I worked at Green Hope 2 years several years ago. I loved how he was in the classroom and knew all that was going on around the school. I admired him and his ability to balance parents, students and faculty concerns. Sounds like he was a wonderful family man as well :) He will surely be missed!

For some moments in life there are no words. ~ David Seltzer, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
This is how I left after my interview with Dr. Hedrick last Julyno words, as he made my decision for me. I'm grateful for him bringing me out of my complacency and hiring me as the Director of the Health Science Academy and CDC at Athens Drive High School. He was a visionary on what I could offer to the school, especially entering Magnet status for the upcoming school year, unannounced at the time to all. He was a strong supporter of our Advisory Board for the Academy, and allowed me to make the best of what will come at Athens Drive The Center for Medical Sciences and Global Initiatives High School.
The world lost a great man.
In deepest sympathy,

Dr. Hedrick hired me at GHHS and quickly became one of my favorite people. He pushed his staff to be the best they could possibly be and was our biggest protector. In his last semester at GHHS, he was my evaluator, and his investment in me as a person was just as meaningful to me as his guidance to me as an educator. I randomly ran into him at a lunch this past spring and was overjoyed with being able to hug his neck and hear that laugh of his. He was such a wonderful man and will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this time.

Camille,
I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Hedrick. Of course, I only knew him when he was Mr. Hedrick. I admired both you and he and the knowledge that you brought to Spotsy High School. In addition, I admired the great marriage that you had and the friendship that you had throughout your life together. I will keep you and your daughters in my thoughts.

Camille,
It is with great sorrow to learn of the passing of
James. He was a great person and touched many lives while always remembering where he came from. Bull and I were in the same class at GW and played together in high school. He was a team player
that gave his all every practice and game. I know he has already had to run a few extra laps in heaven for
Coach Pugh and Coach Wall. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

The obituary does full justice to the Jim Hedrick who I knew. I had the honor of working with Jim when he opened a new high school in Frederick County, VA. I remember him as a no nonsense leader who is remembered fondly by teachers who did what he expected of them and modeled for them- doing their best to make their students successful. What you saw was what you got with Jim, including his sometimes quirky sense of humor. I was proud to have Jim as a colleague and as a friend.
My prayers and thoughts are with Camille and the family

On behalf of my wife (Linda) and my daughters (Erin and Colleen) who were at Athens Drive HS during his tenure, we extend our deepest condolences to his wife and family.
Dr. Hedrick has the reputation of a change agent and he presided over a full spectrum of changes which impacted the our HS school in a profound way, putting Athens Drive on an ever more positive trajectory. I consider Dr. Hedrick a friend. I will sorely miss him. Whenever I spoke to him, his desire to make a difference in the lives of those around him was always the driving force in every situation.

Dr James Hedrick was such an outstanding person and role model. He left an everlasting impression on my daughters when they attended Green Hope HS. Whenever I had the chance to converse with Jim he always had a great spirited smile! James will surely be missed by all.

Hello Camille,
I'm recalling Jim and I working together at Spotsy High as Assistant Principals. I learned so much from him. Lauren was saying to me yesterday that Jim was such a "neat person". I learned so much from him during my first years as an administrator. The one thing I'll always remember and that is Jim saying to me, "Cheryl always be firm, fair, and consistent". Take care and remember we love you.

To the Family,
I was so saddened to hear of "Bull" passing away. I played football with him at GW many years ago and after high school we were competitors as I went to Hampden-Sydney during the same time Bull was at Macon. He was a great teammate, a great competitor, and great man. I, too, am a Kappa Alpha. I mourn the loss of my brother. May God bless you and offer you comfort. Relish the thought that there are many out here who feel the same as I do about Bull.

I was fortunate to know Bull as a friend and teammate at GW and as an opponent when he was at Macon (his one mistake in life). He lead by example on and off the field and he obviously carried that trait trough his adult life..Many of my teammate at Hampden-Sydney remember him as fierce competitor. I am truly sorry for your loss. Bull will be missed by many!

I first met Dr. Hedrick when he became principal of Caroline High School in 2000. I was entering the second year of teaching and thought I knew everything and was going to save the world. It did not take Dr. Hedrick long to make me realize just how little I knew of this world. To this day I have no idea why Dr. Hedrick just didn't fire me and hire someone more capable. That would have been a very easy task. Yet for some reason he chose to believe in me and spent many hours, days, weeks, months, even years helping me to finally learn and understand my chosen profession. Under every lesson was one common theme, do what is best for your students. Just as I was beginning to turn the corner and realize that I could survive in this profession, I was dealt my first major blow as an educator. Dr. Hedrick announced that we was leaving Caroline to open a new school in Winchester. What seemed like a major loss actually turned out to be the first time that I truly felt self value as an educator. To this day the single greatest honor that I ever had was phone call from Dr. Hedrick when he asked me to join him at Millbrook High School. My application, rightly so, to Frederick County was turned down so fast, I do not think my resume ever touched the HR directors desk. But when Dr. Hedrick wanted something, he got it. In this case, he wanted me to teach at his school and I will never forget sitting outside of the HR director's office as Dr. Hedrick went in and made his case for hiring me. There is no greater honor that I will ever receive in my career than that. After two years of teaching, maturing, and growing at Millbrook, possibly the happiest years of my career, we both decided that life was going to take us in different directions. Dr. Hedrick was headed to North Carolina and I was about to get married. Dr. Hedrick told me that marriage would be the greatest joy and struggle of my life and that I would be dumb not to marry the women who was actually willing to marry me. As always, he was right. He told me there are schools everywhere and that God would show the way. I can never repay the debt I owe Dr. Hedrick, I can only promise to do everything I can to inspire the next generation of students and teachers. To help others learn and grow as I have. I do so in his memory and honor. I love and miss you very much Dr. Hedrick. God Speed.

It is a time like this words are at a loss yet I am blessed for having him reoccurring in my life from day one.He is an example of two sides of the same kind. He approached life and education with a firm demeanor yet with such heart. I appreciate his humor and ability to reach out. He did that for me. I aspire to keep his spirit alive in the place that shaped him (GW)and am forever better for having known him for so long. There could never be enough gratitude to repay what he has done for me or any one of the many thousands of lives he has touched as colleagues, teachers, and mentors. He truly was a Superman in his field and I can only see this image as a fitting way of letting us know what he is doing now.

Dr. Hedrick was a consummate educator who bought out the best in his students and staff. He always wanted to make the Green Hope community great. And he did. He encouraged his students and staff, and protected them fiercely. I was blessed to know Dr. Hedrick during his tenure at GH. When my brother died, he attended his wake, and after I had been absent for a week and returned to class, he checked in with me the morning I returned to make sure I was ready to teach. I shared that I could not believe how many people showed up to honor my brother, and he reminded me that many who attended were there to support me, too. His kind words and gestures revealed the man he was. He didn't say much, but his actions always demonstrated unconditional support. I feel blessed to have known and worked with Dr. Hedrick. He was always a source of encouragement and stability, who I will miss sorely. I offer my sincere condolecences to his family. I am grateful to have worked with him for 9 years at Green Hope. Godspeed Dr. Hedrick. Go Falcons!

Dear Hedrick family - our prayers are with you as you grieve the sudden, unexpected loss of your husband, father, grandpa brother, cousin, best friend, neighbor. To us, he was an educator committed to the success of his students and doing his best to maintain its tradition of excellence since it opened. He obviously took this same commitment to Athens Drive. I remember seeing Dr. Hedrick's pride and joy shine at everyfootball game (even when we weren't so great) and then turning the program around; the GH Falcon Regiment taking the field at half-time; the boys and girls track and field competing; the boys and girls basketball teams taking center court; the girls volleyball team beating Apex on their court for the first time in a while; the girls' soccer and LAX and boys and girls XCountry teams winning States; and the Back-To-Back Wachovia-Wells Fargo cups multiple times. He seemed to be at every event, winning or losing, and supporting his students...who were his extended family. Thank you for sharing him with us. Blessings to all of you.

Dear Family of Dr. Hedrick,
I was so very sorry to hear of your loss.
I first met Dr. Hedrick at a Teacher of the Year Banquet in 2012, honoring my daughter, a first year teacher at Green Hope High School. At the banquet, it was so refreshing and warming to see how proud he was of my daughter, as well as how he was investing his time and talent as an educator, to mentor and encourage her as she began her teaching career. Throughout, the next few years, I heard many stories of how awesome Dr. Hedrick was from Amanda, and of how much he supported his staff. After 4 years of teaching, she decided to leave Green Hope and return to graduate school to pursue a career as a school administrator. Dr. Hedrick played a major part in this decision; just one more of many educator's lives I am sure he inspired. I am certain you will be hearing many mores stories about how he touched other lives in the same way in the coming days. It is my hope and prayer, that this legacy will bring comfort, healing and pride to your entire family during this difficult time.

I'll never forget the compassion and tenderness in Dr. Hedrick's words when my son was hospitalized last year with type 1 diabetes. From that moment on, we shared a bond-including my son-talking blood sugars and pumps. He even came to my classroom to show me his new CGM he was using. What a sweet moment.

He was a student, student athlete, and he and Camille were fellow teachers at George Washington High School.

I'll never forget the day Marianne and her dad were dancing at her wedding. The look of pride on his face was worth more than any and all items in the Museum of History. He was one proud dad. And, rightly so. He and his wife brought into this world a couple of women that are change makers. I had to chuckle while reading the obituary. If I could see through the veil, I'm pretty sure "Doctor" Papa Hedrick would also be chuckling while using a full suite of wildly inappropriate words and KA drinking songs. He was a live wire! RIP Doctor Hedrick.

Camille, everyone here at GW, especially those of us who played for him, will always remember Bull for his sense of humor and his stinging sarcasm. His antics along side Coach Pugh, Sonny, Shorty Brown, butch, Vern and Pedro are legendary. Always sought his advice during my Coaching career and he was always painfully honest.
