Jayne Bomberg Obituary
Jayne Bomberg
December 10, 1940 - October 11, 2022
Durham, North Carolina - Jayne Karen Bomberg peacefully passed away a year ago on October 11, 2022, in Durham, North Carolina. She was surrounded by her loving family, friends and the Lockridge community during her final days.
Born Jayne Karen Muerth on December 10, 1940, in Harriman, TN, to William and Mary Muerth. She was the youngest of three daughters, with her sisters Joan and Janice.
Jayne was well-loved and known for her dynamic personality, creativity and welcoming ways. When she said to stop by anytime, she genuinely meant it. She encouraged people to nurture their own gifts and would always lend an ear and offer insightful guidance if someone was going through a difficult time.
She liked to provoke the status quo in her daily life and in her art work and she would always encourage you to dig deeper to look for the true meaning. She was an avid reader and would often say she never gets bored because she has so many interests to keep her occupied. She had a drive to keep learning, and she inspired us all when in 1996 she completed a dual masters of fine art degrees at Pratt Institute in NYC.
Her art career was robust and she worked with many different mediums. It included her tile and mosaic business called "Glazend," collages based on gravestone rubbings and details from her travels, paintings with words, pastel abstracts, and installations reflecting her concern for issues such as war, impermanence and the health care system. Art flowed through her whole life and made our lives and surroundings more beautiful.
She joined Hillsborough Artist Cooperative and Skylight Gallery in 1996 and was part of the 'Three J's,' including herself, Jennifer Miller, and Jackie Liggins, who brought the Last Friday's to life and helped to rejuvenate the city's arts and culture scene.
Jayne is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Bryan Bomberg; and her beloved family, including her two daughters, Gina DeFrank and Joanna Bomberg; her son, Ralph Hodge; her granddaughter, Fiona DeFrank; her son-in-law, Michael DeFrank; her daughter-in-law, Tina Hodge; her grandson, Sebastian Hodge; and her cherished cat, Sunny Jazz.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
