Jeffress Palmer Obituary

Jeffress Gary Palmer, a retired physician, died December 19, 2006. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of William and Margaret Palmer. Dr. Palmer received a B.S. degree from Emory University in 1942 and an M.D. from Emory University School of Medicine in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 until 1947, stationed for a while in Europe. After serving a fellowship at the University of Utah College of Medicine, he joined the faculty of the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina in 1952 and served as the first Chief of the Division of Hematology.
Dr. Palmer was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Palmer and a sister, Margaret Beals.
He is survived by his daughters, Kristin Palmer of Suffolk, VA, Julie Palmer and son-in-law, John La Claire of Austin, TX; sister, Alice Mitchell of Chattanooga, TN; brother, William Palmer of Los Altos, CA; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Melissa and Matthew Harris.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, December 30, 2006 in the Plaza Conference Room at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, West Drive, west of the employee parking deck, UNC School of Medicine, Chapel Hill.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a memorial fund established at the Division of Hematology/Oncology, University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Campus Box 7295, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7295.
