Jerry Ferguson
February 12, 1938 - July 19, 2025
Smithfield, North Carolina - Jerry Hill Ferguson, 87, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025, in Smithfield, North Carolina, surrounded by his devoted family. Born on February 12, 1938, in Raleigh, he was the youngest son of the late Fannie Hill and Owen Earl Ferguson, Sr.
Jerry is survived by the love of his life and wife of 61 years, Mary Nell Lee Ferguson; his children, Lisa McIntosh and her husband, Smithy, and Michael Ferguson and his wife, Amity; and his four treasured granddaughters-Taylor McIntosh and her fiancé, Nick, Lizzie McIntosh, Ellery Ferguson, and Baker Ferguson-each of whom brought him immeasurable pride and joy.
A native of Wake County,Jerry grew up in the village of Millbrook (now part of North Raleigh), where he formed lifelong friendships and values that would define his character. A proud graduate of Millbrook High School's Class of 1956, he excelled as a student leader, lettering in three sports and serving as senior class president and yearbook editor. Jerry's determination and work ethic were evident early on-he put himself through college by working full-time, graduating with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1960. Following his service in the U.S. Army, Jerry embarked on a long and distinguished career as a respected leader in the insurance industry, retiring in 2005 as Senior Vice President of Occidental Fire and Casualty Insurance in Raleigh, NC.
Jerry dedicated his life to serving his community, mentoring young athletes, and teaching the importance of faith. He served as the founding director of the Triangle Insurance Institute, president of the Elkin Jaycees, National Director of the NC Jaycees, Vice Chairman of Johnston County's first Emergency Medical Services Board, and served on the Johnston County Mental Health Board, the Harbor, Inc. Board, the Greater Cleveland Chamber of Commerce, and Johnston County Public Library Board, to name a few.
Jerry's love of sports was a constant throughout his life, whether as a player, mentor, coach, or fan. His passion for the Tar Heels was passed down to his children and grandgirls. As the manager of the '69 Rockets, President of the Sanderson High School Athletic Club, and charter board member of the Capital Area Soccer League, Jerry inspired countless young athletes to achieve their best both on and off the field.
Jerry's faith was a cornerstone of his life. A lifelong Baptist, he was first nurtured in the community of Millbrook Baptist Church in Raleigh and later became a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Smithfield. In both congregations, he served faithfully-as a deacon, a trusted advisor, a mentor, a Sunday school teacher, and a steady voice of peace and unity. His quiet leadership and unwavering commitment to his faith left a lasting impact on all who worshipped alongside him.
Above all else, Jerry's heart belonged to his family. He lived for his wife, children, and grandchildren, finding his greatest joy in their happiness. With quiet wisdom and his signature "just a suggestion," he offered gentle guidance that was always welcomed. A true original-part historian, part human Google-he could recall everything from financial advice to sports stats, movie casts, and song lyrics. He leaves behind a legacy of unwavering love and steadfast support, freely given to those he held dear.
In lieu of flowers, his family would like donations to go to the Johnston Health Foundation Hospice Fund to thank them for their kind and loving care (P.O. Box 1376, Smithfield, NC 27577) or

A memorial service to honor and celebrate Jerry's life will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Smithfield, preceded by a private entombment at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh. The family will be available to guests after the memorial service at the Ferguson home.
