Jerry Hopper Obituary

Jerry Roy Hopper passed away peacefully at his home in Fearrington Village on November 10.
Jerry was born May 14, 1930 in Oklahoma City to Roy and Ollie McClain Hopper. He graduated from Central HS in Oklahoma City in 1948, and the friends he made then remained important to him the rest of his life. After serving in the Navy for three years, he earned his BA from the University of Oklahoma, and became a lifelong fan of the Oklahoma Sooners football team. He then earned an MA from UC Berkeley. Always an active person, Jerry earned his PhD from Kennedy Western University in 2001.
He worked in the oil industry, and 1963-7 in Ankara Turkey for USAID. In 1968 Jerry and his family moved to Chapel Hill where he worked with Achievement, Inc. for a number of years. He continued in the business management field as the principal of firms that consulted with regional, national and international organizations. Jerry had a life long love for the people of Turkey, contributing to relief work including earthquake relief and other projects. He always treasured his Turkish friends. Jerry enjoyed music, raising horses, and being with his family and friends. He had a genuine interest in the welfare of the people that he knew and met.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Hopper; and hisbrother, Robert Voyd Hopper of Arkansas; son, Mark Hopper; daughters, Lauri Langham and Jan Waugh. He was also blessed with grandchildren, Benjamin, Daniel, and Rebecca Langham, Hailey Cook, Marguerite and Skyler Waugh, and Natalya, Laurel, and Roy Hopper; and great grandson, Gavin Langham.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on November 20 at Christ United Methodist Church in Southern Village, Chapel Hill followed by a reception to celebrate his life.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that gifts be made to a charity of the givers' choice.
