Jerry Allen Sherrod, Sr., 62, was born at St. Agnes Hospital in Raleigh, NC to Matthew Needham, Sr. and Mary Elouise Heartley Sherrod. He was the third child with older brother Matthew Needham Sherrod Jr., and sister Sherry Ann Sherrod DuPree.
There will be a viewing at First Missionary Baptist Church, 500 South Pollock Street, Selma, NC from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. November 17th, 2012.
Wake will follow from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral service, 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 18th, 2012, at First Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow the service at the Selma Memorial Gardens.
He was a 1968 graduate of William Mason Cooper High School, Clayton, NC. Afterward he went to W.W. Holding Technical Institute, Raleigh. After 18 months he graduated with a degree in automotive mechanics, 1970. He was married to Joan Atkinson and to this union was born one son, Jerry Allen Sherrod, Jr. September 12th, 1971. Second wife was Claudia Stancil Sherrod. He joined the First Missionary Baptist Church as a youth and remained a member until his death. He worked as a mechanic for five years in Raleigh, 13 years CSX Railroad in Rocky Mount, truck driver for ten years for Sherrod Trucking and other companies. He also worked at Women's prison as a maintenance worker, and North Carolina Motor fleet as a consultant. After receiving injuries in an automobile accident. He retired under disability in 2003.
Survivors are his son, Jerry Allen Sherrod, Jr. and wife, Anna of Dunn; sister, Sherry DuPree and husband, Herbert of Gainesville, FL; brother, Matthew N. Sherrod, Jr. and wife, Thelma of Selma; mother, Mary Elouise Heartley Sherrod of Selma; niece, Tonya E. Sherrod of Selma; nephews, Amil, Andre and Andrew DuPree all of Florida; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father Matthew N. Sherrod, Sr., Uncles Clarence, and Dewey Sherrod, Matthew, and Jerry Heartley; Aunts Lucille, Thelma and Ruth Heartley; Ruby Sherrod and Lottie Sherrod Cross.
