John George Raif Sr.

John Raif Obituary

John George Raif Sr., 73, entered into rest on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000. He was bornin Scranton, PA, and was a Virginia Beach resident. He was a Roman Catholic. He was employed by I.B.M. for 18 years, and thenwas subsequently self employed for 15 years, prior to his work as an electrical inspector for Wake County, NC.
He was aformer captain of the New Hamburg Volunteer Fire Fighters Association in New York. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans in Virginia Beach.
He was preceded in death by his parents Walter L. Raif, and Lela Roesch Raif, a brother, Donald Raif; a sister, Joan Schmeidle; and a grandson, Johnny Charlton.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rosa O. Raif; two sons and daughters-in-law, John Raif Jr. and Judy Raif of Sanford, NC; and Walter and Debbie Raif of Raleigh, NC; a daughter and son-in-law Brenda and George Trau of Exeter, RI; a sister, Ruth Verone of New Jersey; a brother, Robert Raif of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000 in Colonial Grove Memorial Park in Virginia Beach by Rev. John-Mary Tompkins of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church.
A Christian Wake Service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. this evening in Altmeyer Funeral Home Chapel in Virginia Beach, after which the family will receive friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
