John Steinbaugh Obituary

John Henry Steinbaugh

February 27, 1946 - September 9, 2017

Raleigh

John Henry Steinbaugh, 71, died suddenly and unexpectedly Saturday morning while walking at Falls Lake with his wife and their dogs Buddy and Freckles. John was a wonderful husband, father, and friend, doctor and teacher to many people whom he loved.

John was born in Pittsburgh, PA and moved to Raleigh with his wife Barbara 40 years ago. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Patricia Steinbaugh, his brother Michael (Valerie) Steinbaugh and his sister Sally Steinbaugh as well as his mother and father-in-law Frederick and Helen Sickels.

He is survived by his loving wife Barbara; beloved children, Corinne Alise Olson, Jed Stephen Steinbaugh, and John Alexander Steinbaugh; sister Denise (Bob) Fantazier, along with many nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

John was a graduate of LaSalle College, studied graduate level Marina Biology at Duke University, and received his DC degree from Logan College of Chiropractic. He had a thriving private practice for over 30 years at which time he developed a special bond with his patients, many of whom became life-long friends. After retirement from his practice, he was actively consulting and went back to his first love of teaching. At the time of his death, he was teaching Chemistry and Physics at Kerr Vance Academy. John was proud to be a Paul Harris Fellow and a Diplomate of American Board of Forensic Professionals. He was an exceptional athlete excelling in swimming, football, and track in high school and college. He loved volunteering as a timer at Alex's swim meets and track and field events at Ravenscroft.

We are forever grateful to the Wake County (Wake Forest) EMS people who did everything they could do to save John's life. In lieu of flowers, if you wish to make a donation please direct them to Wake County EMS Research Historical Foundation, 395 Albemarle Drive, Clayton, NC 27520.

John and his family were long-time members of White Memorial Church. A memorial service will be held at Renaissance Funeral Home 7615 Six Forks Road in Raleigh on Saturday September 16th at 6:00 PM with a reception following. Condolences: rfhr.com

As his chiropractic patients for many years, we are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Dr. Steinbaugh's sudden passing. As nice and friendly a person who ever lived, seeing him was truly a pleasure, and like Will Rogers, he never met a stranger. He served in the United States Marines in Vietnam and was a credit to the uniform; we admired him for his service there. His extreme physical strength and gentle demeanor distinguished him in our minds. We send our deepest sympathy to his surviving family and wish them the best as they deal with his loss.

What a shock to hear this about John! John and I became friends as runners in the early 80s, and then I became a patient. What a great guy and very good friend. We lost touch in recent years but I did think of him often. My thoughts and prayers go out to Barbara and Alex.
