Magdalena Gebska-Wojdynska Obituary

Chapel Hill, North Carolina - Dr. Magdalena Maria Gebska-Wojdynska of Chapel Hill passed away in late September due to complications from cancer. A beloved physician, wife, mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother, her kindness and ability to delight in life's small wonders will be missed by many.
Born and raised in Warsaw, Poland, young Magda was an active scout and a motivated student. After receiving her medical degree from the Medical Academy of Warsaw in 1977, she completed two years of residency in internal medicine and endocrinology before emigrating to the U.S. in 1981 with her husband and young son.
After passing her required examinations to practice medicine in the United States, Dr. Wojdynska undertook a second residency in psychiatry, completing her training at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she served as chief resident in her final year. In 1994, she entered private practice as a psychiatrist, which she continued through recent months until her illness made it no longer possible.
She found her greatest joy in being able to take care of others, including her patients, her family members, and others who happened to be in need. She was generous with her time, but also with beautifully arranged bowls of fresh fruit, cozy bowls of soup, and calming conversations. She loved planting flowers around her house and yard, trips to the beach or to lakes with her husband, and jumping with both feet into whatever imaginative play worlds her grandkids could conjure.
Magda is survived and desperately missed by her loving husband and partner of 55 years; by her "kids" (her son and daughter-in-law) and her two beloved grandchildren; by her sister and mother; by her dear nieces and their families, and by a wide community of friends from the Triangle to Warsaw, and beyond.

Time has passed but Dr. W.'s memory is as fresh as ever. I miss her so much - not only as a therapist, but as a compassionate, woman and knowledgeable person whose shoes can not be filled by another, and, more importantly, as a friend.

I am forever grateful for the 17 years that I knew Dr.W. The last time we spoke, she told me that she remembered me coming to the office with my baby on my hip. Today, he´s a well-adjusted and happy Sophomore in college now, partially due to Dr.W´s continued support, encouragement, and guidance. She was a remarkable human being that I will keep alive in my heart forever.

I´m still in disbelief. I won´t even rid my empty med bottles with her name. I will definitely go next month to say goodbye. I remember 26 years ago when I went in her dark little office in Chapel Hill in very bad shape. I have never left her side for that long. So I feel like we are going full circle back in CH saying goodbye. It´s ironic our last 2 sessions this year, I was asking how her mental health was with Covid, war....and my very last question I asked her was "You are not retiring anytime soon are you?" "I need you forever " She promised me she was not retiring and she told the truth. We will all as patients just remember all the reassuring talks and answers she gave us. Prayers to her dear family she loved and spoke of with a smile every time

To Dr. W's Family:
I am still trying to process that Dr. W. has passed away. The shock from reading the letter she wrote and the letter that she had died, and the sadness that has followed. I can only imagine how you, her family, are dealing with this.
I have known Dr. W. for a very long time. I first met with her almost twenty-five years ago and my time with her was of great benefit. She had such a vibrant and energetic personality. She was a great listener but also very sharing of information and her advice on how to move beyond the past and to work through current life challenges. I will miss talking with her.
One thing I regret is that I never shared with her how much she meant to me. She helped make me a better person and I will always be thankful for to her for that. She probably realized this but I never managed to tell her.

The shock of hearing the news is hard. Above all my heart and prayers go out to her family. I know how proud she was of her family and how she was looking forward to visiting them at this time. I have never known anyone like her; fierce and compassionate at the same time. I am truly thankful that I was blessed to knowing her for 10 years. She was deeply appreciated and loved, and she will be sorely missed. May she rest in the arms of God.

I arrived home from a trip abroad today and was shocked and saddened to hear of Magdalena's passing. I was a patient of hers, and I considered her one of the wisest most caring and compassionate people I have ever met. Not just as a doctor, but as a person. There are few people in this world I respected more, and I valued her advice and counsel as did my daughter Emma who as also a patient. You are with the angels now Magdalena, and I am sure they know how fortunate they are to have you joining them.

I´m still in disbelief and heartbroken. Magda has been by my side for 26 years and got me where I am today. She was like family and not a Dr to me. She will be dearly missed and prayers to her dear family she spoke of often that made her so happy.
