Marcus Scruggs Obituary

Marcus Leonard Scruggs, 80, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2015 at his home in Raleigh.
He was born on February 23, 1935 in Fayetteville, North Carolina to Ollie Louise Davis Scruggs and William Dover Scruggs. He attended Fayetteville High School and graduated from Wake Forest College in 1956. Following graduation from Wake Forest, he joined his wife's family at Briggs Hardware where he worked ultimately serving as president. He served his country in the US Army. Marcus loved playing golf and spending time with his friends.
Marcus was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn Briggs Scruggs, and his brother, Wilburn Scruggs.
He is survived by his son Marcus Leonard Scruggs, Jr. and wife, Anne Scruggs, his daughter, Evelyn Scruggs Murray, and his three granddaughters, Elizabeth (Scruggs) McGrath, Mary Scruggs and Ashley Bush, his sisters, Hazel Scruggs McGugan, Cordelia Scruggs; and sister-in-law, Diana Scruggs.
There will be a memorial service for Mr. Scruggs on Thursday September 24, 2015 at 11:00 am at Christ Episcopal Church in Raleigh. The family will receive friends at a reception at Christ Church following the service. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Transitions LifeCare, formerly known as Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.

Evelyn and Marc, Your father was such a great man and gentleman . I am honored to have spent time with your family over the last few months. Romans 5: 3-4 says : We persevere through tribulations , knowing that tribulation produces perseverance ; and perseverance , character; and character , hope . Evelyn and family, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I was Marcus' Nurse Navigator at UNC and it was a joy to be a part of his healthcare team for the past 3 years. He was a true joy to work with and I was blessed to be able to get to know him. He was a such a precious and kind man! Thinking and praying for you during this difficult time. Evelyn and Marc what a privilege to get to know your dad during these past months. He is a gift from God to those who are fortunate enough to have been around him. May God grant you peace during these difficult times.

My wife, Nancy, and I saw him in May at the 62nd Fayetteville HS Reunion Class of 1953 in Fayetteville. He was his usual jovial self. We will miss him. May the Lord bless him and keep him forever in his arms. John and Nancy Manos

Marcus was such a true southern gentleman. I always loved to watch him dance. He will be missed. We are praying for comfort from God for his family.

Our prayers and thoughts are with the family members. Marcus was a fine person and a good friend. He loved to compete on the golf course and I occasionally had the pleasure of playing in his group. A lot of good memories from the summers our families shared at Lake Gaston. We will miss his many jokes.
