Marvin Waters Obituary

In life and death
we belong to God.
Marvin Waters, 56, died on May 31 at Duke Hospital after a 4 ½ year battle with colorectal cancer. Marvin was a respected attorney, government official, pastor, and community leader, who strove to be a man of God and a good husband and father.
Born in Plymouth NC on August 28, 1953 to the late Alton Waters and Elsie Waters, Marvin met Peggy in high school and married in 1975. In his early career he served as a minister for churches in Pinetown and New Bern. Marvin felt a call to a different ministry in 1990, and rekindled an earlier dream by starting law school. He served the community through his work at the District Attorney‘s Office, the ABC Commission and the Attorney General’s Office before his final position as Assistant Secretary of the N.C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety.
As a member of Trinity Avenue Presbyterian, his gifts were welcomed as a speaker, teacher, choir member, and church leader. Marvin’s greatest pleasure came through his role as a father. His daughters remember him being at every performance, soccer game, and cheerleading event, even after cancer made it difficult.
He is survived by his wife Peggy Waters; his two daughters, Charlotte Reedy and husband, Ted, and Amy Waters.
The family expresses appreciation to the nurses and doctors who cared for Marvin at Duke Hospital.
A celebration of Marvin’s life will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 5th at Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church, 927 West Trinity Avenue, with the Rev. Dr. Donovan Drake presiding.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, gifts in Marvin’s memory be made to Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church in Durham.

I just learned of Marvin's passing. I had not seen him in several years but remember him very fondly. We worked together as adversaries when he was with DOT. He was a good man whom I admired very much. I will keep the Waters family in my prayers.

To Marvin's family, I am sorry for your loss. I first met Marvin as a lawyer at DOT, and will never forget him, his smile and his friendly manner. I know he loved his family, being a lawyer and his church. He has the love of God in his heart. Bryan Brice (Raleigh)

Marvin was a grand person and I am terribly sorry to hear of his long illness and death. I recall how he he was always smiling when he came into class in law school. He and I kept trying to find a common ancestor because we shared some family names...Marvin, a grandmother named Amy Waters, and a great aunt named Elsie Waters! Family and friends will miss him much.

I attended law school with Marvin and later practiced in Durham with him at the courthouse and me in my law firm. He was always a kind and honorable person. He always said hello. Amy and my step daugher Lauren were friends in high school. I always saw Marvin at the School during shows and games. I am so sorry for this loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mrs. Waters, may the God of all comfort be with you in the coming days and give you the inner peace that only He can provide. Mr. Waters was a man who was easy to befriend. Pamela and I both enjoyed very much visiting with the two of you in your home. We hope to meet you again the next time that we travel ot North Carolina. Until then may God bless and comfort you,

My condolences to the Waters Family and the NC Department of Crime Control and Public Safety; I had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Waters in December 2009, while visiting my daughter, Terri Butler, at her workplace in Raleigh. In those treasured moments, I found Mr. Waters to be very spiritual and he made a divine impact on my life. He will be sadly missed, but we know that God has embraced him for an even higher calling. We have a new angel to watch over us now! God is our Comforter; The joy of the Lord is our strength. Peace and Blessings.

Mrs. Peggy, You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. I haven't seen you all in many, many years, but still have very good memories of our families getting together for dinner, etc, when I was growing up. My parents always enjoyed visiting with you & Mr. Marvin. You will be in my prayers... Take care, Love, Justin Bailey, NYC

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Waters family at this time. It has been a long time since we last saw each other, but you were in my prayers. I will never forget the wonderful Revival service you held at Free Union in Greene County years ago. I will never forget you stopping by my parents house with the Patricks and Luptons for refreshments and fellowship one night after the service. I will also never forget the night you won the Alumni of the Year Award at MOC[even if Ray Wells made you laugh too much]. You are safe with Jesus now my friend and I will miss you. Randy Beaman

Marvin is a source of inspiration to me... Even when he was hurting, he would would talk and pray about issues that I had to deal with... He was fearless in the face of a difficult and painful desease, and loved by many because of his upbeat personality!! I thank God for Marvins Life!
