Mary Milford McCarley Prather, 99, passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2016, at her home in Brighton Gardens in Raleigh, North Carolina after a brief illness.

A memorial service will be held Monday, September 26, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church in Raleigh where Mrs. Prather was a member for several decades. A reception will follow in Finlator Hall at the church.

Mrs. Prather was born November, 12, 1916 in Auburn, Kentucky, the daughter of Mattie and Lynn David McCarley. She lived many years in Fayetteville, NC and moved to Raleigh in 1970.

She received a degree in home economics from Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, KY. In addition to being a homemaker and rearing four children, Mrs. Prather had careers as a farm security agent, a school teacher, a social services worker, and a real estate agent.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, John Gibson Prather; her sister, Lucy A. McCarley; and her brother, Lynn David McCarley, Jr., M.D.

Mrs. Prather is survived by a daughter, Ashley Prather of Raleigh and husband, Alan Latham; and three sons, David Prather of Raleigh and his wife, Patsy; Christopher Prather of Brooklyn, NY and his wife, Beth; and Jim Prather of Boone and his wife, Mary.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Miles Prather of Knoxville, TN, Michael Prather of Creedmoor and his wife, Elizabeth; John Garmhausen of Crested Butte, CO and his wife, Cindy; Sarah Gilbert of Raleigh and her husband, Sam; Robert Garmhausen of Durham and his wife, April; Ashley Ann Prather of Brooklyn, NY; Lucie Prather of Brooklyn, NY; Rosemary Prather of Boone; and Simon Prather of Baltimore, MD. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren, Ben and Will Gilbert of Raleigh; Samantha Rose Perry of Boone; and Baden and Tennyson Garmhausen of Crested Butte, CO.

Her family appreciates the loving care she received from the staff at The Oaks of Whitaker Glen where she lived for 13 years and from the staff at Brighton Gardens of Raleigh for the last year of her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, Transitions LifeCare of Raleigh, or to a charity of one's choosing.

I just loved the visits I had with Grandmother Prather when I was at Meredith College with my dear friend and suite mate Sarah Garmhausen Gilbert. She was such a joy to be around and I always remember her sweet dog always around her protecting her.

She has the prettiest smile and was always joyful from all of my memories. What a blessing to have a grandmother that lives this long and for her to be able to enjoy and love her great children as well. Thinking of you all. Love you Ashley Prather & Sarah Gilbert. God bless.
