Michael Andrews Obituary

Michael William Andrews, beloved husband of Jana Marie Antos, died of complications from ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) on January 19, 2007.
He was 45 years old. Michael's family has lost a loving father, partner and son; his friends have lost a witty and charming companion; and North Carolina has lost an advocate for the environment and the community.
A proud native of Texas, Michael adopted North Carolina as his home in 1996. Earning his living as a Principal Software Engineer with cipherOptics, Michael loved the challenges of his work. Earning his BS in Computer Science from the University of Texas-Tyler enabled him to secure his dream job, and he was thrilled for the opportunity to contribute to such a talented team of colleagues.
But work was not the sum of Mike's life. Shortly after moving to North Carolina, a trip to the Outer Banks motivated him to protect our state's natural resources. He volunteered his free time with the Capital Group Sierra Club and quickly assumed a leadership position. As Conservation Chair, Michael fought to preserve North Carolina's air and water quality through campaigns such as Tree Preservation; Save Open Space; Solutions to Sprawl; and NC Clean Smokestacks. He co-chaired a Transportation Forum to champion transportation alternatives for the Triangle, and advocated for the American Tobacco Trail and Raleigh's Greenway system. Michael also strengthened contacts with other environmental groups and community leaders, working to protect the region's water quality through wider stream buffers, storm water utilities, and tougher tree protection ordinances.
In addition to his environmental activism, Michael believed in the importance of community service on all levels-local, national and international. Michael had a strong faith and led by example. He was the person at the company picnic who quietly bundled up mountains of leftovers and donated them to a homeless shelter; he aided migrant workers needing assistance at the bank or in the grocery store; he anonymously mowed a busy friend's yard. Michael volunteered his efforts not just to his own church or neighborhood-he spontaneously donated time and energy wherever a need arose in the community at large. In the last years of his life, he focused attention to the problems of Sudan and the international community, urging elected officials to allocate more attention to that and other international crises.
Each of these qualities-a strong work ethic, a passion for the environment, and a commitment to community service-made Michael a unique and special individual. His warm smile and quick wit could instantly brighten any room. Even diagnosed with an incurable and debilitating terminal illness-with no chance of a cure-Michael lived each day with courage, dignity and a positive outlook. He was never bitter. His attitude and perseverance in the face of such a horrible illness were amazing. Michael loved his family deeply and was grateful for each day shared with his friends and especially, his family.
In addition to his wife, Michael is survived by his children, Shane and Sarah Andrews; their mother, Cherrie Tchir of Raleigh; his mother, Saundra Raley and maternal grandmother, Ernestine Dickerson, both of Lindale, TX; and his father, Robie Andrews of San Antonio, TX.
The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's Street.
A funeral mass will be held on Monday, January 22, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Sierra Club Foundation, 85 Second Street Suit 750, San Francisco, CA 94105. Better yet, in Michael's memory, dedicate two hours of your very own time to improving our community.

As a childhood friend (elem - HS), of Mike's, one of the thing that stands out most to me was his creative side. In one of our English classes, we all had to draw a picture about an aspect of the story we were reading as a class. While mine and most other kids attempted elaborate sketchings, Mike's was a single apple core. Simple, yet brilliant! It was sad to learn of his struggles with ALS, but immensely impressive to know of his accomplishments and that he touched so many lives. Thoughts and prayers to his family and wide circle of friends.

My words will fail to describe the outstanding person Mike was. Mike and Jana, optimists and gentle souls by nature, made Raleigh feel like my truest home. They will always be my neighbors, even though I now live thousands of miles away.
Mike was one of the wittiest, sweetest and most generous people I have ever known. Handsome and hilarious, he was like the Robert Redford of Raleigh (but with a much better smile.)
Thanks, my dear Mike, for showing me how to kayak, for mowing my lawn, for making me Chilean bean stew -- for being so all around good to a flaky Greek girl who made you dance to techno music. May you rest in peace, my friend. I will miss you very much.
And Jana, Shane, Sarah and Saundra, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Jana, you are a wonderful woman, and my hero.
Love always, Joanna

To Michael's family... I am so sorry to just learn about Mike's illness and passing. Mike and I were great friends in middle and high school, growing up in Jacksonville, Tx. We enjoyed hunting together and mostly being outdoors doing "what teens did while growing up." I specifically remember Mike being funny, creative, brave and very much a leader. As I read all these wonderful memories of Mike shared through his countless friends, I realize how much he accomplished during his life and how many people he touched during his 45 years. My heart goes out to his family and friends during this time of great loss. I will certainly keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Saundra, Ernestine, and,Jana,
What a tremendous loss. We know that Michael was a good and caring person. Saundra was a friend of mine in high school and is still a friend. Ernestine knew my Mother, Inez Shields. Saundra has said so many, many nice things about you, Jana. Our love goes out to you all and your family.

Michael - Meaning; Who is like God. He most certainly will have the oppurtunity to be just that, like God. I know the light was bright and doors opened wide for Michael. The love from and for Michael will certainly sustain you in the days ahead. I pray that God's peace and love surround and envelope all of you and fill you with His strength. And I will keep you in my prayers.

We know that Michael is faring well in his new home. He's part of the heavenly hosts now and able to do even more for his loved ones than he ever was able to do while on the earth.
We could be a little jealous that Michael now knows so many of God's truths that are hidden from human minds. He deserves to know them all.
Bless you, Michael, that you are so glorified and happy and joyful.
We only know Michael through his mom. We're not surprised that he brought joy and understanding to so many lives, just like Saundra has brought to ours.
After reading the beautiful obituary we feel like we truly know him well. What a handsome guy, loved by so many. We are so excited about his glorification and his wonderful new life, hope for us all.

To Michael's Family and Friends, Were'nt we fortunate that in our lives we were blessed to know and love a person such as Michael.. Whether, as a son, husband, father or freind, his legacy in my mind will always be this, he was true to us all and more importantly, true to himself. Our "adventures" together will always bring a smile to my face in this life, and with God's Grace, I'll be looking for a "Redlight" up there in heaven, and know its time to stop and embrace my friend. With Deepest Regards, Joseph Green

Mike was caring, witty, intelligent and -- perhaps most of all -- human. He continues to inspire through his work and his passions and, as Jana so eloquently put it, through his character.

Saundra,
Gary and I can only imagine the pain you and your family are feeling right now. I know Michael knew he had the most wonderful, loving Mother any son could ask for. You would literally "beam" as you spoke of Michael with me! It was obvious he was the "light of your life", and he surely felt that. I know you will forever treasure his life and the fabulous memories you two made together! You were extremely blessed to have had him, as he was you. Our love goes, without saying, out to you and Jana and your grandchildren. From all you've spoke of, Michael was a real fighter and never gave up, keeping his wonderful sense of humor....so dwell on those good and positive things. Please know our thoughts are truly with you and that we love you.

Jana, your courage, unfailing love for Mike and the incredible care you gave him kept him with us longer than we could have hoped. Jana, I did not know Michael personally, but I felt I knew him extremely well because his Mother is my dear friend. Her love for Michael was profound. She was so proud to have him for a son.
