Durham, North Carolina - Miguel Garci-Gomez died on December 26, 2021 at age 89. He was born in 1932 in Almoharín, Spain, entered a diocesean seminar at the age of 12, and was ordained as a priest in 1956. He moved to Florida in 1959 and lived there for 8 years, then earned a master's degree in Latin and Greek in 1969 and a Ph.D. in Spanish literature in 1971 from the Catholic University of America. Professor Garci-Gomez taught at the University of Maryland and Gettysburg College before joining Duke University in 1973.
Miguel Garci-Gomez was a loving husband, father, and abuelo. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane (Waehrens) Garci-Gomez, his sister Florencia Garcia Gomez of Madrid, Spain, his children Erik Garci, Maria Garci Juenger, and Michael Garci, and grandchildren Nolan, Nina and Maya Garci and Benjamin and Cecilia Juenger.
