Raleigh , North Carolina - Patrick Chun Liang Yang, age 79, of Raleigh, passed away peacefully at his home on April 8, 2022. Surrounded by his beloved family, Patrick succumbed to the cancer that he had valiantly battled for many months. Patrick's death, just one day shy of his 80th birthday, will leave a hole in the hearts of many. But Patrick's life has left an indelible impression on many more lives, and that mark will not soon be forgotten.
Patrick immigrated to the US from China as a very young man in search of the American Dream. Armed with talent, fortitude and congeniality, Patrick soon found success, love and respect in the new country that he was so proud to call home.
Patrick moved to Raleigh in 1973. Shortly afterward, he opened Hangchow Restaurant, just the third Chinese restaurant in the Raleigh area and the first to serve Northern Chinese cuisine, gourmet banquet style dinners, and Peking duck. Patrick not only served as Head Master Chef at Hangchow, he was also a mentor, friend and brother to so many who worked with him over the years. Old-time Raleigh residents and patrons of Hangchow will remember Patrick's elaborate feasts, generous spirit and infectious laugh that were the hallmark of Hangchow and brought people back again and again. In later years, Patrick and his wife, Mina, also managed the Imperial Garden Chinese Restaurant in North Raleigh. In his retirement, Patrick still loved to cook and to share his food, his smile and his time with others. Patrick also enjoyed birdwatching, watching sports, game shows and reality TV, and Facetiming with those he loved.
Patrick is survived by his amazingly devoted wife of 46 years, Maximina (Mina) Chua Yang, and his three loving children, Jennifer Yang of Raleigh, Jason Yang of Raleigh, and Julie Yang of Atlanta.
Funeral inurnment will be officiated by Monsignor Gerald L. Lewis in the Columbarium garden at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church in Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church in his memory.
