Dr. R. John Huber

Raleigh

Dr. R. John Huber passed away surrounded by family on October 4, 2017. Known by most as Jack or Doc, he leaves his greatest mark on the world through the deep relationships he built in each arena of his life. He was a loving husband to Polly; an attentive father to Jenny, Beth, and Emily; a compassionate friend to neighbors, fraternity brothers, colleagues, or just a total stranger he met while standing in the checkout line; a mentor to countless Meredith College students during his 37-year career as a professor of psychology; a softball coach to hundreds of Meredith Angels; a summertime lifeguard keeping young swimmers safe in Raleigh and upstate New York; a counselor to people in need of his trademark encouragement; a playful "Papa," quick with a joke, a story, or a hug; and an avid baseball fan and long-suffering Cleveland Indians supporter.

He is survived by Polly, his wife of 51 years; his children Jenny John (Chris) of Roanoke, VA; Beth Patafio of Huntersville, NC; and Emily Callahan (Mike) of Charlottesville, VA; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for Thursday, October 12 at 6:30 PM at Jones Chapel at Meredith College in Raleigh, NC.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Duke Hospice or the Meredith Autism Program in his memory.

Doc was my therapist when I was in counseling. When I was unable to afford therapy he made sure I would be able to continue the sessions by offering me a low cost sliding scale fee. For him it was not about the money, he was genuinely interested in my well-being. He told me once that helping others was his way of giving back to God. He was grateful for all the gifts that God had given him. His life was full of purpose and meaning. To the entire family my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Peace to you, Janet

Thank you for being you Doc. For the countless hours you spent taking care of the people around you each and everyday. Thank you for standing next to and encouraging those around you by sharing your own experience. Thank you for helping those with less strength rebuild what was once broken and guiding them on a path that leads to positive outcomes. You were a joy to have in ones life and a wonderful role model for all ages. No words can explain how deeply you will be missed. Your jokes, wisdom, and kindness will live on for generations to come. God speed my friend. Once again thank you for being you.
