Rand served his country and this community in lots of ways. As a marine, as a teacher during those unsettled days of integration in Raleigh where teachers like him kept it all together, and as a teacher at Millbrook where I had the honor to work with him, Rand was an honorable man. It was a privilege to have worked with him; he will be missed.

Rand Irwin was a terrific teacher and a wonderful colleague at Millbrook High School. He was a true professional who really cared about his students. My thoughts and prayers are with Rand's family.

Mr Irwin had a special gift with teaching. He was my math teacher in the 70s at Carnage Jr High School. Those were days of many changes in an unsettling society. He was constant and memorable. I really looked forward to his class. He made such a lasting impression. My condolences to his family.
