Richard Edwards Obituary
February 2, 1947 - October 17, 2021
Woodstock, Georgia - Rick died peacefully at Heritage Hospice near Woodstock, Ga. Rick was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, the youngest of three children born to Reuben Edwards, Sr. and Lillian Irene Motley. He is survived by his brother Reuben, Jr. and sister Charlotte (Kral). He was a graduate of Enloe High School ('64) and studied Psychology at Campbell University. His interests switched to engineering, but before he could pursue the change he was drafted into the Army and served in the Vietnam War as a radio specialist. He received the Purple Heart in 1968.
Rick returned and worked as an engineer for WTVD in 1969 and then the UNC radio network from '71-'75, alongside Woody Durham. The family relocated to Lexington, Ky. where Rick worked with Cawood Ledford and the UK network, before moving to Miami in '79. In Miami, Rick became a well know station engineer and pioneered many ideas such as "vertical real estate" where towers became leasing revenue, not just a support structure for a single station's antenna. Rick spent time back in Raleigh, then in South Florida before settling down in Woodstock, Ga., near his son's family in 2018.
He is survived by his son Jonathan and spouse, Jennifer (Ackerman), his grandchildren, Jack and Justin Edwards, his ex-wife, Jane (Shearin) Lee and nephews Michael Kral, Bryan Edwards and Page Edwards. Donations can be made to the AFCCE scholarship fund (AFCCE.org) or SBE (SBE.org) on behalf of Rick. A celebration of life will be held in the Raleigh, NC area at a future date. Rick was a very important man in my professional life and a beloved friend. His optimism was a real self-confidence builder. It was remarkable how many people in the broadcast industry knew and respected Rick, not only for his undisputed technical and business abilities, but also for his kindness and integrity. Love and condolences to his family, especially Jon and Jen, Kay, and Anthony.
