Richard Van Emon Hantzmon

December 28, 1928 - May 13, 2015

Charlottesville, VA

Richard Van Emon Hantzmon, 86, of Charlottesville, VA died peacefully after a brief illness on Wednesday, May 13, 2015. Van was born on December 28, 1928 in Washington, DC to the late Anita Torrey Hantzmon and Richard Greenaway Hantzmon. He was pre-deceased in 2010 by his wife of 50 years, Margaret B. "Peggy" Hantzmon. Van's parents moved to Charlottesville when he was just three months old so his father could start an accounting firm. He attended the University of Virginia, graduating from the McIntire School of Commerce in 1951 and the University of Virginia School of Law in 1954. After law school he went to work at Hantzmon,Wiebel & Co. as a C.P.A. He did not stop working until he suffered a stroke in March, 2002. He lived his last 12 years at RoseWood Village Assisted Living. The family would like to thank everyone at RoseWood Village for their exceptional care of Mr. Hantzmon. Van loved working in the yard, woodworking, classical music, travel, and was very active in his church, Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. He is survived by his three sons, their spouses, and six grandchildren: Stephen VanEmon Hantzmon and Jennifer B. Green of Durham and their children, Sarah Virginia Hantzmon and Andrew Foster Hantzmon; Richard Clark Hantzmon and James R. Carnes of Charlottesville; and Matthew Wesley Hantzmon and Jennie Jane Hantzmon of Charlottesville and their four sons, Matthew Wesley Hantzmon jr, William Clark Hantzmon, John Stephen Hantzmon, and Thomas Treganowan Hantzmon. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Anita Hantzmon Ehinger and her husband, Norman J. Ehinger of Philadelphia, as well as several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Charlottesville on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, JAUNT, or to any charity of your choosing.
