Robert Hurst Obituary

Mr. Robert Leonard Hurst went home to be with the Lord on February 23rd, 2007 at the age of 88.
He was born December 11, 1918 to Maude and Howard Hurst. Dad spent his childhood and teenage years in the Shinnston, WV Community. After graduating from high school he was offered a basketball scholarship to Alderson Broaddus College. While there he met and married Angie Ray Hutto on May 1st, 1941. Their daughter, Helen Elizabeth, was born March 28th, 1942.
Daddy was employed by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad for 33 years being excused for two years of service in Japan with the United Sates Army. He retired in 1974 moving to Edisto Beach, SC where he worked for Edisto Realty from 1978 to 1996. My parents continued to live at Edisto Beach until 2001 when Daddy began to suffer physical difficulties and they moved to Walterboro, SC.
While living in DuBois, PA my father became a Christian and from that time forward he could be found telling others about Jesus. Dad never missed an opportunity to share a Christian tract with those he met along the way. He and Mom were members of Edisto Beach Baptist Church but were active in various other churches sharing what God had done in their lives. For several years he served as Camp Minister at Edisto Beach State Park. He was a kind man who was always ready to lend a helping hand!
After being confined to his home Daddy enjoyed memorizing scripture, praying with his friends Mr. George Price and the late Hamlin Graham, MD, and watching "Everybody Loves Raymond." During his final days our entire family was encouraged by Southern Care Hospice and blessed by the tender hands of caregivers Glenda Williams, Queen Coazum, Ora Lee Rivers, Gloria Anderson, Roeburn Rivers, and Esther Dent.
He is survived by a brother in Pennsylvania; daughter, Helen; and son-in-law, Jack Bonds.
His wife Angie, died on December 19th, 2006.
His fun loving spirit will be missed by three grandchildren, Bobby and wife, Harriet Bonds, Kim Winston, and Lauren Al-Dajih along with seven great grandchildren.
The Medical University of South Carolina received him into the Body Donation Program for Research and Teaching. According to his wishes, a formal memorial service will not be held.
As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to: New Directions International, Post Office Box 2347, Burlington, NC 27216 or Southern Care Hospice, 2070 Northbrook Blvd., Suite B1, North Charleston, SC 29406.
Our family would appreciate hearing about any way in which Daddy may have touched your life.
Condolences may be sent to Jack and Helen Bonds, 9115 Carrington Ridge Drive, Raleigh, NC 27615.
To assist with the arrangements the family has chosen The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Homes, Walterboro Chapel, 1193 Bells Highway, Walterboro, 843-538-5408.

I met Mr. Bob and Mrs. Angie when I was a young girl on Edisto. I have the fondest memories of biking with Angie all over the beach before it was discovered and much of it was still wooded lots. That was many years ago. She was such a dear person. I will always remember her kindness, and how much fun we had. She always talked about her family with so much love and pride. She was such a compassionate Christian lady.

And, then there was Mr. Hurst.... He was a true blessing to everyone he came into contact with, whether he was working or playing. I believe that he loved life and lived it to the fullest potential that God intended for us all to live. He was always joking. He had the best sense of humor. We used to have a little joke between us...back when he had rental equipment that he would take to different homes or condos for guests....it never failed, he said I always called him to deliver something, just as he had taken his shoes off. So, after a while when I called, I would ask "Are your shoes off?" He was such a sweet man. Though a devout Christian, he was never judgemental, and he was always a true witness and God's love did shine through him.

Even though, I did not see either of them often in the last few years, I thought of them often. I will always remember them and how they touched the lives of others. They were the kind of people you never forget. They will both be truly missed. Thank God for Heaven and the knowledge that through Jesus, one day I will see them again. God Bless YOu!

Helen and Jack,
I am saddened but joyful to hear of the homegoing of Mr. Robert. I am a truly blessed man to have known a strong christian man who truly loved Jesus with all his heart. I will miss Mr. Robert dearly but I know he is now where he wants to be which is home with his Lord. I am blessed to have known Miss Angie too. Both of your parents were wonderful people who lived their lives in the love of each other and of Christ. May God bless both of you and the family as you grieve your loss. He shall supply all your needs according to his riches and glory in Christ Jesus
