Roderick Duncan Obituary

Roderick "Rod" Martin Duncan passed away on December 25, 2008 at Durham Regional Hospital.
He was born on November 2, 1922 to Carson and Beatrice Duncan in Washington, DC. Rod attended high school at the Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC. He graduated from Swarthmore College in 1942, to which he returned many times in his later years for the annual alumni reunion. After college, he proudly served in the US Army, first during World War II in the Philippines, and again during the Korean war, in Japan. Rod worked his entire career at IBM, starting in Washington, DC, and later transfering to Endicott, NY, White Plains, NY, Rochester, MN, and Raleigh, where he retired in 1979.
He met his wife of 60 years, Millie, at IBM soon after joining the company. After retirement, this loving husband and father of three children enjoyed collecting antiques (going to auctions all over the Southeast and mid-Atlantic states), playing tennis, and traveling widely with Millie. He was an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Durham, NC for the past 15 years, where he loved singing in the choir.
Rod is survived by his wife, Millie; daughter, Suzanne; son, Paul and daughter-in-law, Veronica, son, Greg and daughter-in-law, Atsuko, and grandchildren,Ethan and Leah.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Rod M. Duncan Memorial Fund, Aldersgate UMC, 1320 Umstead Rd, Durham, NC 27712, or the Salvation Army.
Arrangements have been made by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas.
A memorial celebration will be held at Aldersgate UMC on January 3, 2009 at 2:00 p.m.
