Sam Marshall Obituary

Sam Marshall
August 11, 1987 - April 24, 2021
Carrboro, North Carolina - Samuel Alexander Marshall, 33, formerly of Carrboro and Asheville, died April 24th in Da Nang, Vietnam. He was hospitalized for several days in Da Nang and died of respiratory failure.
In the summer of 2019, Sam boarded a flight to Vietnam carrying three things: a suitcase, his banjo, and his golf clubs. Upon his arrival, he began teaching English, first in Ho Chi Minh City and later in Da Nang.
Sam loved Vietnam. He loved his students and they loved him. In Vietnam, he found a community of bluegrass musicians where he could continue his passion for the banjo. When time and money allowed, he enjoyed playing the beautiful golf courses in and around Da Nang, having inherited a love for the game from his grandfather.
Like many others, Sam became a first time pet owner during this pandemic. He adopted a miniature poodle whom he named Nui, the Vietnamese word for mountains. Sam and Nui became constant companions.
Sam loved watching sports and was a diehard fan of both the Ole Miss Rebels and the UNC Tar Heels.
Sam graduated from The Rectory School in Pomfret, Connecticut in 2002 and Chapel Hill High School in 2005. He attended the University of Mississippi.
Sam is survived by his parents, John and Mary Marshall (Paco and Tootie) of Chapel Hill and his brother Jackson (Jack) Marshall of Durham. He is also survived by a host of Marshall and Glenn cousins, aunts, and uncles. He is predeceased by his younger brother, Henry Marshall.
Sam will be deeply missed by his family and friends in Chapel Hill, Asheville, and Vietnam.
A memorial service is being planned for a later date.
