Stephen Holleman Obituary

Stephen Douglas Holleman, 79, passed away on October 13, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born and raised in Cary, North Carolina, Steve remained deeply rooted in the community he loved. He was a proud graduate of Cary High School, where his passion for basketball began-a passion that continued throughout his life both as a player and later as a coach.

Steve attended Lenoir-Rhyne College, where he played basketball and built lifelong friendships. He carried his love for the game into his adult life and was a devoted supporter of Cary High School athletics. His enthusiasm for the school, its students, and its teams was unwavering.

Steve was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Cary, where his faith, friendships, and love for the community were nurtured and sustained throughout his life.

He is survived by his sisters, Pat Holding and Elaine Berry; his daughter, Erika Osterday and her husband, Andrew; and his beloved grandchildren, Sloan and John. His family and friends will remember him for his generous spirit, his dedication to others, and the pride he took in his hometown.

A celebration of Steve's life will be held in Cary, North Carolina, in January 2026. More details will be shared at a later date.

Yesterday

Was a su0er person..i had him for phys.ed in the 10th grade at CHS..funny I used to get out 9f the line up when he was checking role..because a senior student was always calling me out..she was more fun than gym..but the next class we had he asked where I went ..he saw her ..he knew we both just grinned..but he would make me wrestle the ones in my class that were on the school team..and all of them got pretzelized or yeh whooped..Coach Holleman got the biggest kick out of me doing that and picking on his best wrestlers who never pinned me! He was a super guy.. and he still even remembered me 40 yrs later in Ashworths Drug Store..and we laughed about that againRIP

Yesterday

Great memories growing up in neighborhood. Playing basketball with Steve and sometime playing football (very few ) games in that beautiful front yard. Rest in peace.

I met Steve at Independence Village of Olde Raleigh. He would always help me carry and set up my music equipment. He always helped the other residents who needed assistance. He was a kind man with a quick wit. One day he walked up to me to say hello and I asked him how long he had been there (living at Independence Village). He said, I've been here five seconds. I just walked up! He will certainly be missed. Love and prayers to his family.

Steve was one of my first students when I started teaching at Cary High School in 1960. Many years later, we worked together for Colonial Life and Accident Insurance Company. My sincere sympathy to members of his family.

I remember Steve as a child when several of us would play "kick the can" under the magnolia tree out front on Academy street. The entire Holleman family hold a special place in my heart...its a sad time but the reunion is coming!

I had the pleasure of meeting Steve at Independent Living in Raleigh. He was free spirit. He sat at my friend Betty´s table and I would bring the table Strawberry Banana smoothies. He sure loved basketball and jumped up to help the handicapped folks to settle in their places for their meals.

RIP in Mr Steve and peace to your family

I have known Steve since nineteen sixty, when my family moved to Cary. It didn't take long for me to get to know the name Steve Holleman. As a basketball player my self, Steve was part of a baskeball camp that Coach
Adams organized. It was there that I really got to know Steve. From that relationship with Steve, I tried to pattern my basketball knowledge and play just how Steve tought me to. I always deeply admired Steve and the way he carried himself on the court and off the court. The Cary sports community will surely miss Steve and his professonalism, and his love for his home town. REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND!

To Erika, Pat, Elaine and your families, Linda and I send our heartfelt sympathy. I first met Steve when he was a freshman on the Lenoir Rhyne basketball team. We reconnected when we moved to Cary. We were the best of friends since. During the past few years, especially as we drove to Bible Study in Chapel Hill every week, he talked often of what it would be like to reunite with his mom and dad in heaven. Now he knows! Rest in peace, old friend, until we meet again.

I will miss seeing Steve. at Cary HIGH basketball, football,
and baseball games. He and I were also in a men´s
Sunday school class at Cary First Baptist for older men
and we were the youngest men in the class. We had a lot of
great conversations with the older guys. He will be missed.
Our condolences go out to the family.
