Steven Wiegand Obituary

Steven Frederick Wiegand

November 10, 1949 - April 4, 2025

Raleigh, North Carolina - Dr. Steven Frederick Wiegand, age 75, of Raleigh, passed away on Friday evening, April 4th, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He left this world too soon, with a long bucket list of adventures yet unrealized, and as always, "one more cast" to make before he put down the fishing rod.

Born on the military base at Cherry Point, NC, to the late Dr. Frederick and Jean Wiegand, Steve claimed to be a native North Carolinian despite being raised on various bases around the country. Growing up he missed no opportunities for mischief, but also learned the value of family and the importance of being decent and hard-working. Steve was a curious kid who loved to take things apart only to put them back together again, which well-prepared him for his long career in Emergency Medicine. He was a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill and Hahnemann Medical College and was double board-certified in both Family and Emergency Medicine.

Passionate about music, Steve loved a good tune and a great live performance, starting with Janis Joplin playing at his high school's homecoming dance in the 60's. His love of music helped him secure his life-long partner and loving wife, Elizabeth Farabow Wiegand. The two met on a blind date to the UNC Jubilee in 1970, where they watched Joe Cocker, B.B. King, and James Taylor perform. During their 50-year marriage, Steve would continue to play music loudly for Beth on his latest state-of-the-art stereo system, tapping his feet and looking fondly at her. He always found joy in the simple things, like a good song or a great meal paired with a nice wine. He recognized his luck in marrying a gourmet.

Steve is survived by his siblings: Lee Wiegand, Paul Wiegand, and Joyce Wiegand; his wife Elizabeth Wiegand; his three daughters: Kathryn Wiegand, Emily Wiegand Sewer (spouse Jules Sewer), and Rebecca Wiegand (spouse Kaylie Yankura); and his five grandsons: Jonah, Oliver, and Elliott Sewer, and Theo and Fritz Wiegand. He was beloved by all as he gave his love and support with an open, fair, and kind heart. He raised his three girls in the warm embrace of his care, his sense of adventure, and his love of a good practical joke or pun. He loved to steal your dinner roll if you weren't looking and would laugh as much if you ever returned the favor. He would always roll with things like that (see what I did there, Dad?). His kind and generous heart only grew as his family did, making room for his gaggle of grandsons as well.

Adventure was no stranger to Steve, who loved to travel and spend time by the water. Whether walking on the beach, steering a boat with the wind in his curly hair, casting flies while knee-deep in the river, or free diving down to impossible depths that would worry his wife and children, Steve found joy by the water. He knew how to have a good time and appreciate the world around him as he always understood the preciousness of life.

Steve helped several thousand patients in his thirty-three-year career as a physician at the Rex Hospital Emergency Department in Raleigh. He worked hard for many years but was always known for being fair and compassionate. He leaves behind a respected legacy of what it means to be decent, gentle, and kind. He touched many lives and will be missed dearly.

His mother always called him her "Sweet Steve" and he was just that - a sweet man who is gone too soon. A celebration of Steve's life will be forthcoming.

Steve was my partner for several decades in the REX ER. Always a happy face, both patients and co-workers could count on a dose of "good karma" from Steve. Another daily dose of "tomorrow is promised to no-one" reminded us to live each day to its fullest; I can happily state that we have both succeeded on that score. I hope we can all be comforted by this when we think of him in the future.

Dylan had a special word he used at times like this - "sangry". Sad and angry, I feel the same way right now. Wish I made the effort to see your warm smile and feel your happy hug.

I look forward to seeing you Beth and celebrating Steve´s wonderful life with you and your family. Heartbreaking

Steve was cool. I spent many days and nights engaging with him over patients delivered. His love of fishing (both saltwater and fresh), taste for good music and especially love of family ... are life´s trifecta. We all know the time will eventually come. What we do with it beforehand is what´s truly important.

I went to the ER at Rex with the wife and some other co-workers of a very young co-worker who had collapsed and then died in the ER. Dr. Wiegand was the doctor on duty and I was so impressed and appreciative of his tender manner as he informed us of the death. He was particularly gentle with the wife.
Now I send my sincere condolences to his family and will lift you up to the Lord in prayer. May you find comfort in knowing that he made a difference to so many people.
