Susan Hunter Obituary

Susan Wilkinson Hunter

March 21, 1941 - May 29, 2024

Winston-Salem, North Carolina - Susan Wilkinson Hunter, 83, of Apex, NC, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2024. Susan was a beloved mother, daughter, friend, and neighbor to everyone she encountered.

Susan Carol Wilkinson was born at her Wilkinson Grandparents' home in the Brush Creek community of Casey County, Kentucky. Her father, Ancil Clifton Wilkinson, was serving in the Pacific Theater with the US Navy at the time, so her mother, Florence Evelyn Pullen, was helped by her in-laws until Ancil returned home after the war ended.

Eventually, Susan and her mother moved to Louisville, Kentucky where Susan graduated high school.

From there, Susan enrolled at the University of Louisville where she graduated in 1963 and was a member of the Kappa Sigma sorority. It was at the University of Louisville that she met the love of her life (in a square dancing class) Garrett Bowman (Gary) Hunter.

Susan enjoyed a variety of hobbies including gardening, reading, crafts, movies, music, and puzzles. She had a passion for art, crocheting, and other crafts. Susan's love for traveling, both near and far, allowed her to explore the world and create cherished memories. Particularly, Susan enjoyed vacationing at Oak Island, where one might spot her favorite animal, the sea turtle, hatching.

Professionally, Susan had a fulfilling career. She started as a grade school teacher and later became a research and administrative professional with Wake Forest and NC State Universities. Her dedication and commitment to education made a positive impact on the lives of many.

Susan was preceded in death by Gary in November 2023.

Susan will be deeply missed by her surviving family members, including her daughter, Laura Anne Hunter, her sons, Gregory Bowman Hunter and Timothy Bowman Hunter, her grandsons, Benjamin Hunter and Zachary Coleman Scruggs, her grandsons, Gregory Bowman Hunter Jr., Thomas Bowman Hunter and Robert (Bobby) Bowman Hunter, her granddaughter, Madison Grace Hunter, her daughter-in-law, Ginny Hunter, her daughter-in-law, Catherine Hunter, and many other relatives and friends.

She was loved and cared for by several special people over the last year of her life, including Scholastica, Danielle, Lara and many others.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in memory of Susan. This organization was close to her heart and aims to support and empower those affected by breast cancer. She was a 40 year cancer survivor, and an inspiration to many.

Susan's life will be celebrated and remembered by all those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her warm and caring nature, along with her many interests and accomplishments, will leave a lasting impact on the lives she touched.

A private graveside memorial service was held at the Pfafftown Cemetery. Condolences may be sent online at www.salemfh.com.

It was a pleasure being apart of Susan's care team and getting to know a great family in the process. My association with Mrs Hunter will be a pleasant memory to reflect upon. God bless the Hunter family, you're in my thoughts.
